Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Bricco Boschis shows a luminous garnet core with orangish-ruby reflections toward the rim, already hinting at Nebbiolo’s natural evolution. The nose opens with lifted aromas of wild cherry and red currant, followed by notes of rose petals, violet, dried herbs, and a subtle underbrush or scrubland character. Hints of licorice, sweet spice, and a touch of cedar or tobacco emerge with air, giving a sense of depth without feeling heavy. On the palate, the wine is precise and tightly woven, with a fresh, linear acidity that keeps the ripe fruit in perfect check. Flavors of sour cherry, raspberry, and blood orange are layered with dried flowers, fine tea leaves, and a mineral, almost saline edge typical of great Barolo. The tannins are abundant yet very fine-grained and silky, offering grip without harshness, and the 14.5% alcohol is perfectly integrated, adding warmth rather than heat. Production
Bricco Boschis is a historic single cru in Castiglione Falletto, sitting on calcareous clay marl with a strong limestone presence that gives the wines both power and finesse. The vineyard’s south and southwest-facing slopes maximize sun exposure, especially important in cooler years, yet in a warm vintage like 2020, the altitude and well-draining soils help preserve freshness and aromatic lift. Cavallotto farms the estate organically (without certification fanfare), hand-harvesting the Nebbiolo grapes at optimal ripeness and performing a strict selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification follows the traditional Barolo model: long macerations on the skins to extract color, tannin, and aroma, with fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks using indigenous yeasts whenever possible. The wine is then aged in large Slavonian oak botti, which respect the purity of the fruit and the character of the terroir, rather than marking it with overt oak flavors, before a further rest in bottle prior to release.

This Barolo pairs beautifully with rich, savory dishes that can stand up to its structure and acidity. Think braised beef or veal (osso buco, brasato al Barolo), slow-cooked lamb, game birds, and dishes featuring truffles or porcini mushrooms. Classic Piemontese plates like tajarin with ragù, agnolotti del plin, or risotto with aged Parmigiano and mushrooms are ideal matches; mature hard cheeses and aged cow or sheep cheeses also work very well. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large, tulip-shaped glasses. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours helps the wine open its bouquet and soften the young tannins; as it matures, a shorter decant just to remove sediment will be sufficient.
