Description

Castello di Spessa Collio Pinot Nero Casanova Magnum 2021 is a refined expression of Pinot Nero from the hills of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, bottled in an impressive large format for slow, graceful evolution. This is a red wine that marries Italian elegance with Burgundian finesse, offering depth, freshness and a distinctly northern Italian character. In magnum, it’s ideal for special occasions, with the added benefit of extended aging potential and more complex development over time. The Casanova bottling highlights Pinot Nero’s more delicate, aromatic side while still delivering structure and precision from the Collio terroir. Set within an estate that traces its roots back centuries, Castello di Spessa has long been part of the region’s wine history, evolving from a noble residence into one of Friuli’s benchmark producers for characterful, terroir-driven wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Castello di Spessa Collio Pinot Nero Casanova shows a luminous ruby red hue with garnet reflections toward the rim, hinting at its finesse and transparency. The nose is immediately seductive, with lifted aromas of wild red berries, ripe cherry and raspberry, interwoven with notes of rose petals, subtle spice, and a gentle woodland nuance—think dried leaves, a touch of underbrush and a hint of sweet tobacco. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, finely textured Pinot Nero that leans into elegance rather than power. Bright red fruit—cherry, cranberry and red currant—is framed by vibrant yet polished acidity, giving the wine a juicy, mouthwatering drive. Silky tannins provide structure without heaviness, while delicate flavors of baking spice, a whisper of vanilla from oak aging, and a mineral edge typical of Collio’s hillside soils linger through the finish. In magnum, the 2021 has very good aging potential: it is already approachable and charming now, but should gain in complexity, tertiary nuances and textural harmony over the next 8–12 years when properly cellared.

Production
The grapes for Castello di Spessa Collio Pinot Nero Casanova are sourced from hillside vineyards in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where the Collio zone is known for its ponca soils—a mix of marl and sandstone that contributes finesse, aromatic lift and a pronounced mineral backbone to the wines. The climate is influenced by both the nearby Adriatic Sea and the Julian Alps, creating warm days, cool nights and long, even ripening—ideal for a grape as sensitive as Pinot Nero. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to allow careful selection of the healthiest, ripest clusters. In the cellar, gentle destemming and a controlled fermentation on the skins preserve delicate aromatics while extracting fine tannins and color. The wine is then matured—often in a combination of barrels and/or larger wooden vessels—to add subtle spice and textural polish without overwhelming the variety’s purity, before being bottled in magnum for extended, slow evolution.

Food & Serving
This Pinot Nero is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with roasted poultry, duck breast, herb-crusted pork loin, veal scaloppine and lighter game birds such as quail or guinea fowl. It also complements mushroom risotto, truffle dishes, porcini tagliatelle and semi-aged cheeses like Asiago or mild Pecorino. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic detail and silky texture. For optimal enjoyment, especially in its youth and in magnum format, decant for 45–60 minutes to allow the wine to open up and fully express its layered bouquet and fine structure.
