Description

Castello di Pomino Leonia Pomino Metodo Classico Brut Millesimato 2019 is a refined sparkling wine from the Tuscan Apennines, crafted in the traditional method from Chardonnay and Pinot Nero. Named after Leonia, the pioneering ancestress of the Frescobaldi family, this cuvée captures her bold spirit in a wine that is at once expressive, elegant and distinctly modern. It stands out for its high-altitude freshness, precise craftsmanship and an historic legacy that dates back to the late 19th century.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Leonia 2019 typically shows a bright straw-yellow hue with subtle golden reflections and a very fine, persistent mousse. The bubbles form a delicate, continuous bead, hinting at careful long lees-aging. On the nose, expect layered aromas of citrus zest, green apple and white peach, interwoven with notes of brioche, toasted hazelnut and fresh pastry from the extended time on the lees. Hints of white flowers, chalk and a touch of spice add complexity. The palate is crisp and vibrant, with a lively acidity that frames flavors of lemon curd, pear and stone fruit, supported by pastry cream and almond nuances. The texture is creamy yet taut, with a clean, mineral-driven finish that lingers elegantly. This vintage has the structure and acidity to develop further in bottle for several years, gaining more brioche, honeyed and nutty complexity while retaining its backbone of freshness.

Production
The fruit for Leonia is sourced from the high-altitude vineyards of Pomino in Tuscany, an area influenced by the Apennine mountains where cooler temperatures and significant diurnal shifts favor slow, aromatic ripening. The soils are predominantly mountainous and well-draining, helping to enhance finesse and mineral tension in Chardonnay and Pinot Nero. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful selection to preserve purity and acidity. After gentle pressing, the base wines are vinified separately, often at controlled temperatures in stainless steel to retain aromatic freshness, with a portion potentially aged on lees to build texture. The final blend then undergoes second fermentation in bottle following the Metodo Classico (traditional method), and the wine is aged sur lie for an extended period to develop fine bubbles, autolytic complexity and depth before disgorgement and dosage.

Food & Serving
Leonia Pomino Metodo Classico Brut Millesimato 2019 is a versatile food wine that shines with refined dishes such as oysters, scallop crudo, sushi and sashimi, or delicate white fish with citrus and herbs. It pairs beautifully with shellfish risotto, grilled prawns, light poultry dishes, soft cheeses and charcuterie, and also works as an elevated aperitif. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its freshness and fine mousse. A brief, gentle aeration in the glass is usually sufficient, but for more complexity, you can open the bottle 10–15 minutes before serving rather than decanting, to preserve the delicate bubbles.

Producer
Castello Pomino is part of the historic Frescobaldi family estate, one of Tuscany’s most influential wine dynasties with roots stretching back over 700 years. The Pomino area, nestled in the cool, elevated foothills east of Florence, has long been a site of experimentation with French grape varieties, thanks in large part to Leonia Frescobaldi, who was among the first to plant Chardonnay and Pinot in the area. Her visionary work led to the construction of Italy’s first gravity-flow winery and international recognition, including a gold medal at the Paris Expo in 1878. Today, Castello Pomino – Frescobaldi continues this legacy by crafting elegant, mountain-influenced wines and Metodo Classico sparkling cuvées that highlight the unique high-altitude terroir and the estate’s pioneering spirit within Tuscany.
