Description

Castello di Pomino Leonia Pomino Metodo Classico Brut Millesimato 2018 is a refined, traditional‑method sparkling wine from the cooler high-altitude hills of Tuscany. Crafted from Chardonnay and Pinot Nero, it combines Italian finesse with a distinctly French-inspired elegance. Named after Leonia, the visionary ancestress who first planted French varieties at Pomino, this cuvée celebrates a bold spirit of innovation wrapped in classic, timeless style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Leonia 2018 typically shows a bright, luminous straw-yellow color with fine, persistent bubbles forming an elegant, creamy mousse. The perlage is delicate yet lively, hinting at the wine’s energy and precision. On the nose, expect a layered bouquet of citrus zest, green apple, and white peach, intertwined with notes of brioche, toasted hazelnut, and a gentle hint of pastry cream from extended aging on the lees. Floral nuances (acacia, jasmine) and a touch of mineral chalkiness add complexity and freshness. The palate is dry, crisp, and finely structured, with a core of juicy orchard fruit, lemon curd, and subtle red-berry hints from Pinot Nero, supported by vibrant acidity and a refined, creamy texture. The finish is long, saline, and elegant, with lingering notes of citrus peel and freshly baked bread. Thanks to its structure and acidity, this 2018 vintage has solid aging potential; it can be enjoyed now for its vibrancy or cellared for 5–8 more years to develop richer toast, honey, and nutty nuances.

Production
The Pomino estate lies in the Apennine foothills of northeastern Tuscany, at notably high altitudes for the region, with cooler temperatures and significant diurnal shifts that favor slow, even ripening and preserve acidity—ideal conditions for traditional-method sparkling wines. Chardonnay and Pinot Nero are carefully cultivated on well-drained, predominantly rocky and mineral-rich soils that contribute finesse and tension to the final cuvée. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness for sparkling production, prioritizing freshness and aromatic purity. After gentle pressing and an initial fermentation in temperature-controlled conditions, the base wines are blended and undergo a second fermentation in the bottle following the Metodo Classico (traditional method). The wine is then aged on its lees for an extended period to develop complexity, autolytic notes, and a fine, persistent mousse before disgorgement and dosage.

Food & Serving
This Metodo Classico Brut is a versatile partner at the table, ideal both as an aperitif and throughout a meal. Pair it with oysters, scallop crudo, sushi, and delicate fish dishes, or serve alongside tempura, fritto misto, and lightly fried appetizers where its acidity cuts through the richness. It also complements soft cheeses, poultry with citrus or herb sauces, and refined vegetable dishes such as asparagus risotto or artichoke flan. Serve well chilled at around 6–8°C (43–46°F) to highlight its freshness and fine bubbles. A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass is usually sufficient for it to open up; decanting is not necessary, but pouring into generous sparkling or white-wine glasses will allow its aromatics to fully express themselves.

Producer
Castello di Pomino is part of the historic Frescobaldi family estates, one of Tuscany’s most influential wine dynasties, whose roots in viticulture stretch back over 700 years. The Pomino appellation, nestled high in the hills east of Florence, has long been known for its pioneering spirit and early embrace of French grape varieties. Leonia, the namesake of this wine, was a trailblazer of the 19th century: she introduced Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to Pomino, vinified them in Italy’s first gravity-flow winery, and earned a gold medal at the Paris Expo in 1878. Today, Castello di Pomino upholds that legacy by crafting elegant, cool-climate wines and some of Tuscany’s most distinctive sparkling wines, blending tradition, innovation, and an unwavering focus on quality.
