Description
Castello di Ama Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo 2019 is a benchmark expression of modern Chianti Classico, crafted entirely from estate-grown fruit in the hills of Tuscany. Named after the picturesque San Lorenzo valley that cradles 18th‑century villas Pianigiani and Ricucci, it marries tradition with precision winemaking. As a Gran Selezione – the highest tier in the Chianti Classico quality pyramid – it offers guaranteed origin, meticulous selection and impressive depth, all released only after a long 30‑month maturation.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 San Lorenzo shows a deep, vibrant ruby red with garnet reflections at the rim. The nose is refined and layered, opening with classic Sangiovese notes of wild cherry, red plum and dried rose, followed by hints of blackberry, violet, sweet spices, and subtle balsamic tones. Gentle accents of tobacco leaf, graphite, cedar and a touch of cocoa reflect its careful oak aging.
On the palate, the wine is elegant yet structured, with ripe red and dark berry fruit framed by fine, chalky tannins and a lively, mouthwatering acidity that speaks clearly of Chianti Classico. Flavors of sour cherry, blackcurrant and blood orange peel evolve into notes of licorice, savory herbs and a long, mineral-driven finish. The balance of concentration, freshness and precision suggests excellent aging potential; stored correctly, this 2019 vintage should develop further complexity over 10–15 years, gaining more truffle, leather and forest floor nuances with time.
Production
San Lorenzo Gran Selezione is produced exclusively from Castello di Ama’s own vineyards in the heart of Chianti Classico, at elevations that typically range between about 450 and 550 meters above sea level. These high hillside sites, rooted in classic Tuscan galestro and alberese (rocky marl and limestone) soils, give naturally low yields, excellent drainage and a marked diurnal temperature swing that preserves acidity and aromatic finesse. The blend is centered on Sangiovese, complemented by Merlot and Malvasia Nera for added texture and depth. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are used. Fermentation usually takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with gentle extraction to preserve elegance, followed by malolactic fermentation and aging in French oak barriques. The wine rests on its lees and is matured for an extended period before bottling, and is only released after at least 30 months from harvest, in accordance with the Gran Selezione regulations.
Food & Serving
This Gran Selezione is a natural match for richly flavored Tuscan cuisine: think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, game birds, and dishes with porcini mushrooms or truffles. It also pairs beautifully with aged pecorino, mature hard cheeses and hearty pasta dishes with ragù or wild boar. For best enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the tannins to soften and the layered aromatics to fully emerge.
