Description

Castello di Ama Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo 2011 is a benchmark Tuscan red that captures the elegance and depth of high-altitude Chianti Classico. Sourced from old vines and meticulously selected parcels, it represents the estate’s most refined expression of Sangiovese, lifted by touches of Merlot and Malvasia Nera. As one of the early standard-bearers of the Gran Selezione category, this 2011 bridges tradition and modern precision in a beautifully age-worthy wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2011 San Lorenzo shows a deep, garnet-tinged ruby color, with a slight brick hue just beginning to appear at the rim—an indication of its graceful evolution in bottle. The nose is layered and complex, offering classic Chianti aromas of sour cherry and wild strawberry, intertwined with dried rose petals, cedar, tobacco leaf, and hints of leather. Subtle notes of graphite, baking spice, and a touch of dark chocolate emerge with air. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, refined and poised rather than heavy. Juicy red and black cherry, plum, and a whisper of blackcurrant are supported by vibrant acidity and finely etched tannins that have softened beautifully with age but still retain a gentle grip. Savory undertones of earth, dried herbs, and balsamic complexity lend depth through the long, persistent finish. The 2011 vintage is now in a very attractive drinking window, showing tertiary complexity while keeping its freshness, with the potential to continue evolving gracefully for another 5–8 years under good cellaring conditions.

Production
The grapes for San Lorenzo come from vineyards around the historic hamlet of Ama, nestled in a picturesque valley framed by 18th-century villas in Gaiole in Chianti. At 450–500 meters above sea level, the vines grow on classic Chianti Classico soils of galestro and alberese, which provide excellent drainage and contribute to the wine’s aromatic lift and mineral backbone. Fruit is sourced from older plantings and from parcels that are at least ten years old and have demonstrated perfect polyphenolic ripeness at harvest. All grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted to ensure only the healthiest clusters are used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vessels with frequent pump-overs to gently extract color, tannin, and flavor from the skins. The wine is then aged in small oak barrels—typically a portion new and the rest second or third use—to add structure and complexity without overwhelming the Sangiovese’s varietal character, followed by further bottle aging before release as Gran Selezione.

Food & Serving
This Gran Selezione is a natural match for classic Tuscan cuisine: bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted lamb, braised beef, or game dishes such as wild boar ragù will all highlight its savory depth. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses like Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano Reggiano, and mature hard cow’s milk cheeses, as well as mushroom-based dishes and truffle-inflected pastas or risottos. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to allow its aromatics and texture to fully express themselves. Decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended to open up the bouquet and soften any remaining youthful edges, especially if enjoyed on the younger side of its drinking window.

Producer
Castello di Ama is one of Chianti Classico’s most respected estates, located in the commune of Gaiole in Chianti at the heart of the denomination. Revitalized in the 1970s by a group of families passionate about quality, and guided for decades by the vision of Lorenza Sebasti and oenologist Marco Pallanti, the winery played a leading role in elevating Chianti Classico to world-class status. Their focus on high-density vineyards, strict yield control, and meticulous parcel selection has made Castello di Ama a reference point for elegant, terroir-driven Sangiovese. The estate is also renowned for integrating contemporary art installations into its historic surroundings, underscoring its reputation as both a cultural and winegrowing landmark in Tuscany, with numerous high scores and international accolades for its Gran Selezione and single-vineyard wines.
