Description
Castello Banfi Poggio alle Mura Rosso di Montalcino 2024 is a polished expression of Tuscany’s signature Sangiovese grape, combining vibrant fruit with the structure and elegance associated with Montalcino. Produced from 100% Sangiovese grown around the historic Poggio alle Mura castle, it offers an approachable alternative to Brunello while retaining a refined, distinctly Tuscan character.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby red in the glass, this Rosso di Montalcino opens with expressive aromas of ripe cherries and blackberries, complemented by subtle notes of tobacco, liquorice and gentle spice. The palate is enveloping yet lively, with refreshing acidity, well-integrated tannins and a balanced, persistent finish.
Its fruit-forward style makes it enjoyable in its youth, while the combination of acidity, tannic structure and oak maturation gives it the potential to develop additional savoury complexity over the next several years when stored in a cool, dark cellar.
Production
The grapes come from hillside vineyards surrounding Castello di Poggio alle Mura in the Siena area, at elevations above 200 metres. The Pliocene soils are sandy and silty, with limestone, marine sediments and abundant stones that promote both freshness and a clear expression of Sangiovese. Following environmentally conscious vineyard practices, the fruit undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation in Horizon hybrid tanks, combining stainless steel and wood. Skin maceration lasts approximately ten days, followed by malolactic fermentation and 12 months of maturation in French oak barriques before a final resting period in bottle.
Food & Serving
A versatile partner for Tuscan-inspired cuisine, this Rosso di Montalcino is particularly well suited to grilled or roasted red meat, game, hearty pasta dishes, wild boar ragù and medium-aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decanting is not essential for immediate enjoyment, but a brief 20–30 minute decant can help open the wine and soften its structure, especially when serving a younger bottle.
Producer
Founded in 1978, Castello Banfi has become one of the most recognised names in Montalcino and helped bring the area’s wines to an international audience. The estate is centred around the historic Castello di Poggio alle Mura and is known for combining respect for traditional Tuscan winemaking with careful research, modern cellar technology and responsible vineyard management. Its wines are widely regarded for their consistency, elegance and ability to express the character of Sangiovese and the Montalcino terroir.
