Description

Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Marrucheto 2020 is a single-vineyard expression of Sangiovese that captures the elegance and structure of one of Tuscany’s most celebrated terroirs. Crafted from carefully selected grapes grown in the Marrucheto vineyard, this Brunello offers a refined, modern profile while staying true to the classic soul of Montalcino. The 2020 vintage, marked by balanced ripeness and freshness, has produced a wine with both immediate appeal and impressive cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Vigna Marrucheto 2020 shows a deep, luminous ruby core with garnet reflections beginning to form at the rim. The nose is layered and precise, opening with dark cherry, wild berry and plum, followed by notes of dried roses, Mediterranean herbs, and subtle hints of tobacco, cedar, and sweet spice from carefully judged oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet poised, with ripe red and black fruit framed by fine, chalky tannins. Flavors of sour cherry, raspberry and black tea unfold alongside hints of licorice, balsamic, and a touch of cocoa. The acidity is vibrant and well-integrated, lending tension and length to a long, savory finish. While already enjoyable with a decent aeration, the 2020 Vigna Marrucheto has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully over 12–18 years, gaining complexity and tertiary notes with time in the cellar.

Production
Vigna Marrucheto lies on the southern slopes of Montalcino, where a mix of galestro (friable schist), clay and limestone soils combines with excellent exposure and diurnal temperature shifts to produce Sangiovese of notable depth and aromatic purity. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with rigorous selection both in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the finest bunches make it into the final cuvée. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats to preserve freshness and varietal character, with extended maceration on the skins to extract color, structure and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged in a combination of large oak casks and carefully chosen barriques or tonneaux, allowing the Sangiovese to integrate its tannins and develop subtle spice without overwhelming the fruit, before further refinement in bottle prior to release.

Food & Serving
This Brunello’s depth and structure make it a natural partner for rich, savory dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, braised lamb shanks, ossobuco, or game such as wild boar and venison. It also pairs beautifully with aged Pecorino Toscano, truffle dishes, and hearty mushroom or ragu-based pastas. Serve at 16–18 °C (60–64 °F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully open, especially while the wine is still in its youthful phase.

Producer
Banfi, founded in the late 1970s by the Mariani family, played a pivotal role in bringing Brunello di Montalcino to a global audience and in establishing Montalcino as one of Italy’s premier fine wine regions. With an emphasis on research, clonal selection of Sangiovese, and meticulous vineyard management, Banfi helped modernize quality standards while respecting local tradition. The estate’s extensive holdings in Montalcino are farmed parcel by parcel, allowing for the development of distinctive single-vineyard wines like Vigna Marrucheto, which showcase the diversity of the area’s terroirs. Over the decades, Banfi has garnered international recognition and numerous accolades, solidifying its reputation as a benchmark producer in Tuscany and a reference point for Brunello enthusiasts worldwide.
