Description
Castellare di Castellina’s Sodi di San Niccolò 1988 is a mature Tuscan red from one of the estate’s most prestigious vineyards. Regarded as one of the pioneering “Super Tuscan” wines, it combines traditional Sangioveto with a small proportion of Malvasia Nera, offering a fascinating opportunity to experience the evolution of a landmark wine from the late 1980s.
Tasting Notes
After more than three decades in bottle, the wine is likely to show a garnet to brick-red colour, with the rim gradually paling according to its storage history. The nose may reveal mature aromas of dried cherry, plum, leather, tobacco, earthy spice and dried flowers, with tertiary notes becoming more pronounced over time.
On the palate, expect a developed, savoury character supported by well-integrated acidity and softened tannins. Flavours of red fruit, cedar, forest floor and spice may lead to a long, nuanced finish. As with any mature wine, condition and provenance are especially important; this 1988 vintage is best enjoyed now rather than held for extended ageing.
Production
Sodi di San Niccolò is produced from Castellare di Castellina’s hillside vineyards in the Chianti Classico area of Tuscany, where limestone-rich, marl-based soils and a moderate altitude help preserve freshness in the grapes. The wine is traditionally based on Sangioveto, the local expression of Sangiovese, complemented by Malvasia Nera. Grapes are carefully selected and fermented before maturation in oak, followed by extended bottle ageing that allows the wine’s structure and aromas to develop. Exact details of the 1988 production may vary according to the estate’s practices at the time.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C, and allow the bottle to stand upright before opening so any sediment can settle. A cautious decant of 30–60 minutes may help separate sediment and gently open the wine, although older bottles should be monitored closely. Its savoury maturity makes it a natural partner for Tuscan dishes, roast lamb, wild boar, braised beef, mushroom preparations, aged Pecorino Toscano and other rich, earthy foods.
Producer
Domini Castellare di Castellina is a respected estate in Castellina in Chianti, in the heart of Tuscany’s Chianti Classico region. The winery is known for combining a strong commitment to native Tuscan grape varieties with meticulous vineyard work and a distinctly elegant style. Sodi di San Niccolò helped establish the estate’s reputation beyond traditional Chianti, becoming one of the region’s notable early Super Tuscan wines. For this mature 1988 bottle, careful storage and provenance will be key to its drinking experience.
