Description
Case Basse di Gianfranco Soldera Sangiovese 2020 MG is a rare Sangiovese from Tuscany’s Brunello hills, with dark cherry, violet and slow grace in magnum. This is Soldera in its most deliberate lane, Sangiovese from the Case Basse world with tobacco leaf, plum skin and the kind of perfume that asks for a proper decant.
About the Wine
The 2020 Case Basse di Gianfranco Soldera Sangiovese MG comes from the Brunello di Montalcino district, where Soldera’s Sangiovese grows on galestro and alberese soils. The mix of limestone, clay and schist feels present in the wine’s firm mineral line. Organic and biodynamic farming matter here, as Case Basse has long treated the vineyard as part of a broader living estate. This magnum carries that careful Soldera rhythm, with fruit that feels grown for time and deep cellaring. The 14.5% alcohol reads as natural weight, tied to ripe cherry, plum and a dry finish.
In the cellar, this dry red follows the Soldera path of long patience in large Slavonian oak casks known as grandi botti. The wine spends a minimum of three years in those casks, then gains further bottle age before release. The oak leaves a wide frame, with tobacco leaf and leather set around the fruit. In 1500 ml, this 2020 Sangiovese has a slower pulse and a perfume that should unfurl over many hours. The last impression in the glass is violet skin, warm stone and dark cherry held in a deep garnet colour.
Tasting Notes
Deep garnet in the glass; the first pour is dark and tightly scented, with black cherry and ripe plum under a violet note that feels pure Soldera and distinct from young Brunello. Air brings dried rose, tobacco leaf, leather and a faint earthy mineral tone that recalls the galestro and alberese soils named for this bottling. The palate has long Sangiovese lines, with fine-grained tannins, bright acidity and a slow finish that moves from cherry stone to cured tobacco over several minutes on the tongue. In magnum, the 2020 feels tightly packed at this stage, with 14.5% alcohol sitting inside dark fruit and a dry finish that leaves leather and warm stone before a last echo of black cherry. Drink 2030-2060.
Food Pairing
Serve this Soldera Case Basse Sangiovese 2020 MG from magnum with bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled rare and rested so the wine’s cherry stone and tobacco notes meet charred beef fat. A regional plate of pappardelle al cinghiale is even better after an hour in the decanter, as the game ragù draws out leather, plum and violet. For a slower table, choose roasted venison with juniper, hare in salmì or braised beef cheeks with porcini. The wine also has the savoury depth for aged Pecorino Toscano, finocchiona and other cured meats, especially when the cheese has a firm crystalline edge. Keep the side dishes earthy: cannellini beans with rosemary, roasted mushrooms and grilled radicchio echo the bottle’s violet scent, warm stone note and dry tannin.
Producer
Case Basse is built around a vineyard garden that Gianfranco and Graziella Soldera began shaping after they bought the property in 1972, with the vines treated as one part of the estate’s living fabric and daily rhythm. The estate sits in the Tavernelle area of Montalcino, where woods, flowers and water stand close to the rows and give the place a recognisable Soldera identity in the glass. That identity is vivid in the bottle, with Sangiovese smelling of fruit and leaves, then earth and flowers in a way that has made Case Basse fiercely individual. For the top wine, Soldera focused on Sangiovese from the Case Basse and Intistieti vineyards, then gave it long aging in large Slavonian botti before further rest in bottle. Release dates followed the cellar’s pace, and that patience made each bottle feel like a document from a single place and a single grape rather than a scheduled luxury release. After Gianfranco Soldera’s death in 2019, the family kept his name on the Case Basse di Gianfranco Soldera label and continued the severe focus on dry Sangiovese.
