Cascina Ghercina, Barolo Riserva 2020

Cascina Ghercina Barolo Riserva 2020 is a classic Piedmontese red made from Nebbiolo, combining firm structure with a rich, velvety texture. Produced by the fourth generation of the Sartirano family, it reflects a winemaking tradition that began in 1871, the year Rome became the capital of Italy. The Riserva style and extended maturation give this Barolo added depth and complexity, making it a compelling choice for cellaring or enjoying with substantial cuisine.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour with the developing garnet hues typical of mature Nebbiolo, this Barolo opens with an expressive bouquet of warm spices, subtle liquorice and layered dark-fruit nuances. On the palate, it is full-bodied and supple in texture, with impressive concentration and a firm framework of abundant, finely persistent tannins. The finish is long and savoury, with spice and liquorice returning alongside a pleasant mineral edge. It is approachable with decanting, but has the structure to develop further in the bottle over the coming years.

Production
The grapes come from the Novello estate, where the lake situated at the heart of the property contributes to a distinctive vineyard microclimate. The grapes are crushed and destemmed before fermentation in stainless-steel tanks, followed by 12 days of skin maceration with daily remontage to extract colour, flavour and tannin. The wine is then matured in Slovenian oak casks before completing its development in bottle.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for richly flavoured dishes, this Barolo pairs beautifully with hare, wild boar, roasted meats and grilled red meat. Its structure also makes it well suited to mature, full-flavoured cheeses. Serve at approximately 18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to breathe; decanting for one to two hours is recommended to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s aromatic complexity.
