Cascina Ghercina, Barbaresco 2023

Cascina Ghercina Barbaresco 2023 is an elegant Piedmontese red made from Nebbiolo, a grape celebrated for combining fragrance, structure and remarkable longevity. Produced by the fourth generation of the Sartirano family, it reflects a winemaking tradition that began in 1871 while offering a polished, approachable expression of Barbaresco.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a bright ruby-red colour with garnet nuances. Its nose is refined and expressive, marked by elegant balsamic notes alongside the delicate floral and red-fruit character typical of Nebbiolo. On the palate, it is warm and full-bodied, with impressive structure, silky tannins and a long, persistent finish. Although enjoyable now after suitable aeration, the 2023 vintage has the balance and tannic framework to develop further in bottle over the next several years. With age, its fruit and balsamic tones should gain added complexity and finesse.

Production
The grapes are destemmed and crushed before fermenting at controlled temperatures in stainless-steel tanks. The wine remains on its skins for approximately 12 days, with daily pump-overs to extract colour, aroma and structure. Following malolactic fermentation, it matures for 18 months in large Slavonian oak casks, allowing the Nebbiolo tannins to soften while preserving the wine’s freshness and character. The Cascina Ghercina estate takes its name from the lake at the heart of the Sartirano family’s Novello property, which contributes to the area’s distinctive vineyard microclimate.

Food & Serving
Serve this Barbaresco at approximately 18°C. It is an excellent match for game birds such as pheasant and pigeon, as well as turkey, poultry, other light meats and mature cheeses. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, particularly when serving the wine young, to open its balsamic aromas and soften its tannins.
