Description

Casanova di Neri’s Pietradonice is a distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon from the hills south-east of Montalcino, where the grape takes on a clear Tuscan identity. First produced in 2000, it reflects the estate’s long-standing ambition to create a serious, age-worthy Cabernet shaped by the character of its stony terroir.

Tasting Notes
The 2019 Pietradonice is deep and brilliant ruby-red in colour. Its aroma combines ripe red fruits with an inviting array of spices, while subtle mineral notes add further depth. On the palate, it is both powerful and remarkably refined, balancing Cabernet Sauvignon’s concentration with lively acidity and firm, well-integrated tannins. Complex yet graceful, the wine finishes long and persistent, with fruit, spice and mineral nuances lingering on the palate. Its structure and freshness give it excellent ageing potential; it can be enjoyed now with decanting, but should develop further complexity over the next 10–15 years when stored in suitable conditions.

Production
The grapes come from vineyards in the area south-east of Montalcino, where the soil is notably rich in stone—a feature reflected in the name Pietradonice. Grapes are carefully selected by hand both before and after destemming. Fermentation takes place naturally, without the addition of cultured yeast, in an open, cone-shaped, temperature-controlled vessel. Maceration and fermentation last around 18 days, followed by 18 months of ageing before release, allowing the wine’s fruit, tannins and terroir-driven character to come into balance.

Food & Serving
Its combination of depth, acidity and structured tannins makes Pietradonice an excellent match for grilled or roasted beef, Tuscan-style bistecca, lamb, game and richly flavoured pasta dishes. It also pairs well with mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours before serving, particularly if enjoying the wine in its youth.

Producer
Founded by Giovanni Neri in 1971, Casanova di Neri has become one of the most respected estates in Montalcino, with a reputation for expressive, precise and age-worthy wines. Although best known for its Brunello di Montalcino, the estate’s Pietradonice demonstrates its skill with international varieties, translating Cabernet Sauvignon through the distinctive soils and climate of the region. The wine’s first vintage was produced in 2000 and remains a notable expression of the estate’s pursuit of great Cabernet from Montalcino.
