Description
Casanova di Neri Pietradonice 2021 is a bold, pure Cabernet Sauvignon from the rolling hills of Montalcino in Tuscany, crafted by one of Italy’s most acclaimed Brunello producers. This is not a traditional Sangiovese-based Tuscan red, but a powerful, modern interpretation of the region through the lens of an international grape. Named after the onyx-rich soils (“pietra d’onice”) where the vines grow, Pietradonice has become a cult favorite for those seeking depth, structure and Tuscan character in a Cabernet.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Pietradonice 2021 shows a deep, almost opaque ruby color with violet highlights, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is intense and layered, opening with blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, followed by graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf and hints of dark chocolate, licorice and Mediterranean herbs.
On the palate, this Cabernet is full-bodied and structured, with dense black fruit wrapped around firm, fine-grained tannins. Ripe cassis and blackberry are lifted by notes of sweet spice, espresso and a subtle, savory minerality from the stony soils. The acidity is vibrant enough to keep the wine fresh and energetic despite its richness, and the finish is long, with lingering notes of dark fruit and spice. While already impressive in its youth, the 2021 vintage has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for 12–18 years, gaining complexity and polish over time.
Production
Pietradonice comes from high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards planted on poor, stony soils rich in onyx, southeast of Montalcino. This unique terroir, with its rocky subsoil, good drainage and significant day-night temperature swings, contributes to the wine’s firm structure and pronounced minerality. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted, and fermented in stainless steel or temperature-controlled tanks to preserve purity of fruit and varietal character. Macerations are typically long to extract color, aroma and tannin, followed by aging in small French oak barrels (barriques), a significant proportion of which are new, to add complexity, polish the tannins and support the wine’s long-term aging potential.
Food & Serving
Casanova di Neri Pietradonice 2021 is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes: think grilled or roast ribeye, bistecca alla fiorentina, lamb chops with rosemary, venison, or slow-braised short ribs. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano, and deeply flavored mushroom or truffle dishes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for best expression. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and open up the aromatics; with bottle age, a shorter decant will be sufficient mainly to remove sediment.
Producer
Founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri, Casanova di Neri has grown from a small family estate into one of Montalcino’s most respected and influential producers, particularly celebrated for its Brunello di Montalcino and single-vineyard bottlings. The winery played a key role in elevating the reputation of Montalcino on the world stage, with multiple top scores and international accolades. Pietradonice reflects Casanova di Neri’s more experimental, contemporary side: a pure Cabernet Sauvignon that interprets the Montalcino terroir through a different grape variety, showing the estate’s commitment to precision viticulture, meticulous selection and expressive, ageworthy wines.
