Description
Casanova di Neri Irrosso 2016 is a refined yet approachable Tuscan red that showcases the estate’s flair for elegance beyond its famous Brunellos. This medium-bodied blend centers on Sangiovese, lifted by a touch of international varieties for extra depth and structure. Expect a wine that balances classic Tuscan character with a modern, polished style, ready to enjoy now yet built with enough backbone for a few more years in the cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Irrosso shows a vibrant, deep ruby color with youthful highlights at the rim. The nose is inviting and complex, opening with black cherry and dark plum, then unfolding into notes of saddle leather, dried green herbs, cedar wood, and a gentle spice that hints at pepper and clove.
On the palate, this is medium-bodied with lively acidity that gives the wine real energy and drinkability. Flavors of black cherry, red currant, and blackberry are layered with savory tones of leather, dried thyme, and a subtle earthy note, all wrapped in fine, well-integrated tannins. The finish is clean, juicy, and persistent, marked by a pleasant herbal kick and a touch of oak spice. Drinking beautifully now, it will continue to develop greater complexity over the next 4–6 years, rewarding short- to mid-term cellaring.
Production
Irrosso 2016 is crafted from 80% Sangiovese and 20% Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot, sourced from Casanova di Neri’s Tuscan vineyards with their characteristic mix of rocky, mineral-rich soils and warmer exposures. These conditions produce grapes with both ripeness and freshness, a hallmark of the estate’s style. The fruit is carefully harvested—often by hand—to ensure optimal ripeness and selection before gentle crushing. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats to preserve aromatic purity and varietal character, followed by maturation in carefully chosen oak to add polish and structure without overpowering the Sangiovese core. The result is a balanced, expressive Tuscan red that marries tradition with a contemporary touch.
Food & Serving
This versatile Tuscan red shines alongside classic Italian dishes such as tomato-based pastas, pappardelle with ragù, pizza with cured meats, and grilled sausages. It pairs equally well with roasted chicken, pork tenderloin, lamb chops, and aged hard cheeses like Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression of fruit and aromatics. A short decant of 30 minutes can help the wine open up, softening the tannins and bringing forward its darker cherry, herbal, and cedar nuances.
Producer
Casanova di Neri is one of Montalcino’s most acclaimed and influential estates, founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri with a vision to express the finest potential of Sangiovese. Over the decades, the winery has earned an international reputation for its Brunello di Montalcino, including multiple top scores and global recognition for its single-vineyard bottlings. Situated in the rolling hills of Tuscany, the estate combines meticulous vineyard work with thoughtful, modern winemaking, helping to shape the contemporary style of the region. Wines like Irrosso extend the Casanova di Neri philosophy beyond Brunello, offering access to the same attention to detail and regional character in a more relaxed, early-drinking format.
