Description
Casanova di Neri’s Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto 2019 is one of the estate’s most prestigious and sought-after wines, crafted from a single, exceptionally expressive vineyard. A benchmark for powerful yet refined Sangiovese, it combines the structure and longevity expected of great Brunello with remarkable aromatic precision and elegance.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour with developing garnet tones, the wine opens with an intense and complex nose of dark cherries, wild berries, violets and dried Mediterranean herbs, followed by notes of cedar, tobacco, warm spices and subtle mineral nuances. On the palate, it is concentrated and beautifully layered, with ripe but firm tannins, vibrant acidity and flavours of black cherry, plum, liquorice and savoury spice. A long, persistent finish reveals impressive balance and depth.
The 2019 vintage offers both richness and freshness, making the wine approachable with careful aeration while promising considerable development in bottle. Properly stored, it should mature gracefully for two decades or more, gaining further complexity and softness over time.
Production
Cerretalto comes from a distinctive single-vineyard site in Montalcino, where the combination of elevation, exposure and mineral-rich soils helps produce Sangiovese of exceptional concentration and freshness. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected before fermentation, allowing the purity of the fruit and character of the site to take centre stage. The wine is then matured in oak for an extended period before release, giving its substantial structure time to integrate while preserving its freshness and aromatic detail.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for rich, savoury dishes such as Tuscan-style beef, roast lamb, wild boar ragù, braised meats and aged Pecorino or Parmigiano. Serve at approximately 18°C in a large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glass. Decant for one to two hours before serving, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth; older bottles should be decanted carefully to remove any sediment without exposing them to excessive oxygen.
Producer
Founded by Giacomo Neri in 1977, Casanova di Neri has become one of Montalcino’s most respected estates, known for combining meticulous vineyard work with a clear focus on site expression. The winery’s Brunellos, particularly Cerretalto, have played an important role in establishing the estate’s international reputation for powerful, age-worthy and highly polished wines. Today, Casanova di Neri remains a leading reference point for modern, terroir-driven Brunello di Montalcino.
