Description
Carruades de Lafite 1993 is the second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates. Produced in Pauillac from the estate’s younger vines and parcels surrounding the famous Lafite vineyards, it offers an opportunity to experience the château’s classic style in a mature vintage with considerable historical character.
Tasting Notes
At around three decades of age, this wine is expected to show a mature garnet colour, possibly with brick-red tones at the rim. The bouquet should reveal developed aromas of cedar, tobacco leaf, dried herbs, leather and dark berries, alongside the earthy, graphite-like notes often associated with Pauillac.
On the palate, the fruit is likely to have evolved towards savoury nuances, with cassis and plum complemented by cigar box, spice and forest-floor character. The tannins should be softened but may still provide structure, while the finish can show the lingering, mineral quality typical of the appellation. As a mature wine, it is best enjoyed now, although careful storage may allow further development in bottle.
Production
The wine comes from Pauillac’s gravel-rich terroir, where well-drained soils encourage deep-rooted vines and help produce structured, age-worthy red wines. As with the estate’s grand vin, the fruit is traditionally harvested by hand and carefully selected before fermentation and maturation in oak. Carruades de Lafite is made to express the Lafite style with a slightly more approachable profile, while retaining the structure and elegance associated with the property.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C with classic dishes such as roast lamb, beef fillet, venison, duck or mushroom-based preparations. A mature bottle benefits from standing upright before opening and should be decanted gently, primarily to separate the wine from any sediment rather than to expose it to prolonged aeration. Taste shortly after decanting, as a wine of this age may be delicate once opened.
Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates and was ranked as a Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification. Located in Pauillac in the Médoc, the property has been associated with refined, long-lived Cabernet-led wines for centuries and has been part of the Rothschild family’s holdings since 1868. Carruades de Lafite takes its name from the Carruades plots near the château and is regarded as one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious second wines.
