Description
Carillon de Angélus Saint-Émilion Grand Cru 2018 is the refined second wine of the iconic Château Angélus, offering a luxurious taste of this legendary estate in a more approachable style. Crafted primarily from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it delivers all the hallmarks of top Right Bank Bordeaux: elegance, depth, and a velvety texture. As the second label of one of Saint-Émilion’s most celebrated châteaux, it combines grand cru pedigree with immediate drinking pleasure and excellent value.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Carillon de Angélus shows a deep, shimmering ruby-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and youthful energy. The nose is expressive and polished, with aromas of ripe black cherries, blackcurrants and plums layered with violets, graphite, subtle cedar, and a touch of cocoa and sweet spice from quality oak.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with a silky, caressing texture and finely grained tannins that reflect the estate’s hallmark finesse. Juicy dark fruit – black cherry, cassis and blackberry – is supported by notes of mocha, baking spice and a gentle mineral thread. The finish is long and fresh, with a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine lively and food-friendly. While already harmonious and enticing in its youth, the 2018 has the structure to evolve beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity and tertiary notes of leather, tobacco and dried flowers with careful cellaring.
Production
Carillon de Angélus is sourced from the clay-limestone and sandy-clay slopes and foot of the famous Angélus hillside in Saint-Émilion, a terroir renowned for giving Merlot and Cabernet family varieties both richness and elegance. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, allowing precise selection at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, fruit is sorted meticulously before a gentle vinification in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity of fruit and aromatic finesse. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a portion new, the rest seasoned) for a period that allows it to gain structure and complexity without overpowering the freshness and charm that define the Carillon style.
Food & Serving
This Saint-Émilion Grand Cru pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roasted lamb, entrecôte with herb butter, duck breast, veal chops and game birds, as well as richer poultry and mushroom-based dishes. It also works well with aged hard cheeses like Comté or Tomme and truffle-infused recipes that echo its earthy, savory nuances. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression; if enjoyed young, a gentle decanting of 45–60 minutes helps open up the bouquet and soften the tannins. For bottles with a few years of age, a shorter decant of 20–30 minutes is usually sufficient.
Producer
Château Angélus is one of the most prestigious estates in Saint-Émilion, holding the coveted Premier Grand Cru Classé (A, historically) status and a reputation for producing some of the Right Bank’s most opulent yet refined wines. Owned and managed by the de Boüard de Laforest family for generations, the estate is famed for its amphitheatre-shaped vineyard surrounding the chapel whose bells inspired its name. Over the years, Angélus has become a benchmark for meticulous vineyard work, precision winemaking and a style that marries richness with impeccable balance. Carillon de Angélus, the château’s distinguished second wine, was created to showcase the same terroir and savoir-faire in a more immediately accessible, gastronomic expression, further cementing the estate’s importance in the Bordeaux landscape.
