Description
Carillon d’Angélus is the second wine of the esteemed Château Angélus, offering a more approachable expression of Saint-Émilion while still carrying the hallmark elegance of the estate. Crafted in one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated appellations, it delivers a refined balance of ripe fruit, structure, and finesse that makes it a compelling choice for lovers of classic Right Bank reds.
Tasting Notes
The wine typically shows a deep garnet colour with youthful ruby highlights. On the nose, expect layers of dark cherry, plum, blackberry, and subtle floral notes, often supported by hints of spice, cedar, and a touch of vanilla from oak ageing.
On the palate, it is usually supple yet structured, with polished tannins, fresh acidity, and a core of ripe red and black fruits. The finish tends to be elegant and persistent, with enough structure to reward short- to medium-term cellaring.
Production
Sourced from vineyards in Saint-Émilion, the wine benefits from Bordeaux’s clay and limestone soils, which are especially well suited to Merlot-driven blends and help preserve freshness and precision. Harvesting is generally carried out carefully to select healthy, fully ripe fruit, and vinification is done with an emphasis on preserving fruit purity and the supple style of the second wine, often including oak ageing to add texture and complexity.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, duck breast, beef tenderloin, mushroom risotto, and hard cheeses such as aged Comté or Manchego. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 30–60 minutes if drinking young to help the aromatics open up.
Producer
Château Angélus is one of Saint-Émilion’s most renowned estates, known for its prestige, consistency, and long-standing reputation in Bordeaux. As the estate’s second wine, Carillon d’Angélus offers an accessible way to experience the finesse and precision associated with the château, while still reflecting the quality and attention to detail that have made the producer a benchmark in the region.
