Description
Cardinale Napa Valley 2014 is a refined mountain-driven red from one of California’s most sought-after producers. Built primarily around Cabernet Sauvignon, with a small proportion of Merlot, it combines vibrant dark fruit, floral lift and finely polished tannins with the depth and structure associated with Napa Valley’s mountain vineyards. Cardinale was founded in 1982 with the ambition of creating a distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon from the region’s finest sites.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, lively dark-red colour. Its aromatic profile brings together ripe black and red fruit with elegant floral tones, while subtle oak-derived nuances add further complexity.
The palate is concentrated yet graceful, with vivid dark fruit, fine-grained tannins and a balanced, persistent finish. Its structure and freshness give the 2014 vintage excellent cellaring potential, and it should continue to develop added savoury and tertiary complexity with careful ageing.
Production
The blend is shaped by grapes from Napa Valley’s mountain vineyards, particularly Mount Veeder and Howell Mountain, complemented by fruit from terraced sites and a small amount of Merlot. These high-elevation and hillside sources contribute depth, structure and layered complexity. The wine was matured for 19 months in French oak barrels, allowing the fruit and tannins to integrate while adding subtle spice and toast.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for grilled or roasted beef, lamb and game such as venison, Cardinale also works beautifully with richly flavoured poultry dishes. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C. Decant for approximately one to two hours before serving to soften the tannins and allow the wine’s floral and dark-fruit aromas to open fully.
Producer
Cardinale was established in 1982 with a clear focus on producing a singular Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine from exceptional Napa Valley vineyards. Since 2001, winemaker Chris Carpenter has guided the estate, creating one carefully considered wine each year and drawing on mountain fruit from sites including Mount Veeder and Howell Mountain. This consistent focus on site expression and blend complexity has made Cardinale a respected name among Napa Valley’s premium red wines.
