Description
Capanna Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2018 is a classic, cellar‑worthy Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most respected traditional estates. Crafted only in top vintages and from the estate’s best parcels, this Riserva showcases the depth, structure and elegance that have made Brunello famous worldwide. It’s a wine for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate authenticity, longevity, and a truly Tuscan sense of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Riserva shows a vibrant, deep ruby red hue, still youthful yet with a hint of garnet at the rim that hints at its slow evolution. The nose is intense and complex, opening with ripe red cherries, wild berries and plum compote, followed by layers of sweet spice, dried herbs, leather and a touch of tobacco and cedar. Subtle notes of dried rose, balsamic nuances and a hint of underbrush add further sophistication as the wine breathes.
On the palate, this Brunello Riserva is full‑bodied and structured, with a firm but finely woven tannic backbone that speaks to its serious aging potential. Flavors mirror the nose: red and black cherry, raspberry and red currant jam, intertwined with savory notes of spice, licorice, cocoa and earthy minerality. The acidity is lively and well‑integrated, giving the wine lift and precision, while the long, persistent finish leaves impressions of red fruit, spice and leather. Enjoyable now with proper aeration, it will continue to develop beautifully over the next 10–20 years, gaining even more complexity and harmony in bottle.
Production
Capanna’s Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2018 is sourced from estate vineyards in the northern part of Montalcino, an area known for its cooler climate, marl and clay‑limestone soils, and excellent diurnal range that favors slow, even ripening of Sangiovese. Yields are kept low and the grapes are carefully selected, often harvested by hand in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and health. After gentle crushing and fermentation in temperature‑controlled tanks, with a traditional, extended maceration on the skins, the wine is aged for an extended period—typically several years—in large Slavonian oak casks (botti), followed by further refinement in bottle. This classic, low‑intervention approach preserves the purity of the fruit, highlights the terroir, and builds the structure and longevity expected of a serious Brunello Riserva.
Food & Serving
This Riserva is a natural partner for rich, savory Tuscan dishes: think bistecca alla Fiorentina, slow‑braised beef or lamb shank, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, or game birds roasted with herbs. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino Toscano or mature Gruyère. Serve at 18 °C (about 64 °F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux stems to allow the aromas to unfold fully. Decant for 1–2 hours if drinking now to soften the tannins and open the bouquet; with additional bottle age, a shorter decant of 30–45 minutes will usually suffice.
Producer
Capanna is a historic, family‑run estate situated in the Montosoli zone in the northern part of Montalcino, an area long prized for producing some of the region’s most refined, long‑lived Brunellos. Founded in the 1950s and among the earlier estates to bottle Brunello under their own label, Capanna has built a reputation for traditional winemaking, meticulous vineyard care and wines that age gracefully for decades. Their commitment to classic methods—large Slavonian oak, careful selection of Sangiovese clones, and respect for terroir—has made them a benchmark for Brunello lovers and a key reference point in the Montalcino landscape, with their Riservas often singled out by critics and collectors as exemplary expressions of the appellation.
