Description
Cantine Povero’s Barolo Priore 2021 is a classic expression of Piedmont’s most celebrated wine, made from Nebbiolo and shaped by the family’s long-standing commitment to traditional winemaking. "Priore" means “the chosen one,” an apt name for a Barolo that combines power, elegance, and a distinctly local sense of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the deep garnet tones typical of Barolo, with the kind of brightness and concentration that hint at a serious wine in the making. The bouquet opens with red berries, floral notes, spice, and a touch of vanilla from oak ageing.
On the palate, it is juicy yet firmly structured, with the robust tannins and layered character Nebbiolo is known for. Expect plenty of red fruit, dried flowers, spice, and a firm backbone that should reward further cellaring; this is a wine with very good aging potential.
Production
Barolo Priore comes from vineyards in the Barolo area of Piedmont, where Cantine Povero works with traditional local varieties and a strong focus on sustainable farming. The estate has no use for pesticides on its vineyards, and since 2019 its own vines have been certified organic.
The grapes are vinified and then aged for 38 months in oak, a long élevage that adds complexity, texture, and subtle vanilla notes while preserving the varietal identity of Nebbiolo.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for rich, slow-cooked dishes such as oven-braised beef shank, but it will also shine with roast game, truffle-based dishes, and mature cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting is recommended to allow the wine to open up and soften its tannins.
Producer
Cantine Povero is a traditional family estate based in the heart of Piedmont, with the first vines planted in 1948. Now run by the fourth generation, the winery has built its reputation on a deep respect for local grape varieties and environmentally responsible viticulture.
The estate is particularly significant for its work with native Piedmontese grapes such as Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Arneis, and its organic vineyard certification since 2019 underlines its commitment to quality and sustainability.
