Cantine Povero Barbera Pensè 2022 is a bold, characterful take on Barbera, made with a partial appassimento technique that brings extra depth, concentration, and aromatic intensity. Aged for 24 months in oak and a further 12 months in bottle, it combines Piemonte’s vibrant Barbera style with a richer, more structured profile that stands out from the crowd.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby-red colour with impressive intensity. The nose is generous and inviting, unfolding notes of dark chocolate, spice, and ripe black fruit. On the palate, the wine is powerful and concentrated, with firm tannins balanced by Barbera’s naturally fresh acidity. The finish is long and persistent, with layers of dark fruit and spice continuing to evolve. It has excellent aging potential and should continue to gain complexity over time.

Production
Barbera Pensè comes from carefully selected vineyards in Piemonte, Italy, a region known for its rolling hills, fertile soils, and ideal wine-growing conditions. The grapes are partially dried before pressing in the appassimento style, which concentrates flavour and aroma, before the wine is matured for 24 months in oak barrels and then 12 months in bottle.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for hearty game dishes such as wild boar or venison, as well as red meats with rich sauces. It also pairs well with dark chocolate for a more adventurous finish. Serve at 16-18°C, and consider decanting for around an hour to allow the wine to open fully.

Cantine Povero is a family-owned producer in Piemonte with roots dating back to 1948, now led by the fourth generation. The estate is known for its commitment to local varieties like Barbera, Nebbiolo, and Arneis, as well as sustainable farming practices, with its own vineyards biologically certified since 2019. Their wines are respected for their authenticity, craftsmanship, and strong expression of Piemonte’s terroir.
