Description
Cantine Povero’s Barbera d'Asti Marida 2023 is a charming, fruit-forward red from the heart of Piemonte, shaped by generations of family know-how. Made from carefully farmed, pesticide-free vineyards, it offers the lively character Barbera is known for, along with a touch of oak-aged complexity and spice.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Marida shows a deep ruby-red colour with a bright, youthful edge. The nose is generous and inviting, with ripe red cherry, plum and blackberry, followed by soft spice, a hint of vanilla and subtle toasted notes from the oak.
On the palate, it is juicy and supple, with Barbera’s natural freshness supporting the ripe fruit. The tannins are smooth and rounded, while the finish brings a pleasant savoury spice. This is a wine that can be enjoyed now for its immediate charm, though it will hold nicely over the next few years as the oak and fruit continue to knit together.
Production
The grapes come from Cantine Povero’s organically certified vineyards in Piemonte, where the family has cultivated vines since 1948. The vineyards are managed without pesticides, reflecting a strong commitment to sustainable farming and the preservation of local varieties such as Barbera, Nebbiolo and Arneis. After a manual harvest, the fruit is briefly macerated before fermentation in stainless steel, followed by 10 months of maturation in partly new oak barrels.
Food & Serving
Serve Marida slightly below room temperature, ideally around 16–18°C. It pairs beautifully with veal dishes, slow-cooked stews and mature red cheeses, and benefits from a short decant if served young to help open its aromatic depth.
Producer
Cantine Povero is a traditional family estate based in the heart of Piemonte and now run by the fourth generation. Founded on vines first planted in 1948, the winery has built its reputation on careful vineyard work, respect for local grape varieties and a clear commitment to organic farming. Its focus on quality and regional authenticity has made it a respected name in Barbera, Nebbiolo and Arneis.
