Description
Cantemerle 2017 is a classic Haut-Médoc red from one of Bordeaux’s historic classified estates, offering the polish and structure collectors expect from a 5ème Grand Cru Classé. Elegant, Cabernet-led and beautifully composed in a cooler vintage, it captures the refined left-bank style that has made Cantemerle a dependable name for generations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby core with youthful purple reflections. The nose leans toward blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf and a touch of violet, with subtle spice and smoky oak in the background.
The palate is medium to medium-full in body, with fine tannins, bright acidity and a balanced core of dark berries, plum and savory earth notes. The finish is persistent and structured, suggesting very good aging potential; while approachable with air in youth, it should continue to develop gracefully over the next 8–15 years, gaining more complexity and softening in texture.
Production
Cantemerle sits in the Haut-Médoc on Bordeaux’s left bank, where gravelly soils help Cabernet Sauvignon ripen while preserving freshness and tannic precision. In a vintage like 2017, harvesting is typically carried out parcel by parcel to capture optimal ripeness, followed by careful sorting and traditional vinification with temperature-controlled fermentation and ageing in oak to build structure and nuance.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, mushroom dishes and hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for about 1–2 hours if drinking now to allow the aromas and tannins to open up.
Producer
Château Cantemerle is one of the oldest estates in the Médoc and was classified as a 5ème Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Its reputation rests on producing refined, reliably balanced wines that express classic left-bank character, and it remains a respected name among Bordeaux enthusiasts for its combination of pedigree, consistency and value.
