Description

Canalicchio di Sopra’s Rosso di Montalcino 2023 is a fresh, fruit-driven expression of Sangiovese that combines youthful energy with the structure and concentration associated with Montalcino. Produced from the estate’s younger vineyards, it offers generous fruit, refined tannins and impressive depth, making it an inviting alternative to the region’s more powerful Brunello wines. Canalicchio di Sopra has been crafting wines in Montalcino since 1962.

Tasting Notes
Bright ruby-red in appearance, this Rosso opens with inviting aromas of ripe red cherries, raspberries and plums, complemented by subtle floral notes and a gentle suggestion of spice. On the palate, it is lively and well-concentrated, with fresh acidity, succulent fruit and excellent structure. The tannins are notably sweet and silky, giving the wine a polished, approachable character while maintaining the depth and persistence typical of Sangiovese from Montalcino. Enjoyable in its youth, the 2023 vintage is well suited to drinking now, particularly after a little time in the glass. It should also develop gracefully over the next few years, gaining further harmony while retaining its vibrant fruit profile.

Production
The grapes come exclusively from Canalicchio di Sopra’s younger vineyards in the northern part of Montalcino, including the estate’s sites in Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli. Differences in elevation, exposure and soil contribute distinct Sangiovese characteristics, which are carefully blended in the cellar. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperatures, with daily pump-overs and 15–20 days of maceration on the skins. The wine is then matured for 12 months in Slavonian oak casks of 50 and 25 hectolitres, together with 750-litre French oak barrels.

Food & Serving
A versatile partner for rustic Italian cooking, this Rosso is particularly well suited to pasta with meat-based sauces, hearty soups, roasted meats and mature cheeses. Serve lightly cool at around 16–18°C to highlight its freshness and fruit. Decanting is not essential, but a short decant or 30 minutes in a large glass can help the wine open and reveal more of its aromatic depth.

Producer
Founded by Primo Pacenti in 1962, Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra is a respected family estate in northern Montalcino. Now in its third generation, the winery manages approximately 60 hectares of land, including 15 hectares of vineyards and two hectares of olive groves. The family combines modern cellar technology with a strong respect for traditional methods and the natural environment, carefully blending fruit from its different Montalcino sites to produce Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino and Riserva wines of distinctive character.
