Canalicchio di Sopra’s Rosso di Montalcino 2020 is a vibrant, youthful expression of Sangiovese, combining fresh red-fruit character with the concentration and structure associated with Montalcino. Produced from the estate’s youngest vineyards, it offers an approachable alternative to Brunello while retaining the depth, sweet tannins and sense of place that define this renowned Tuscan appellation.

Tasting Notes
Bright ruby red in appearance, this Rosso opens with inviting aromas of ripe cherries, red berries and subtle floral notes, complemented by delicate hints of spice and oak. On the palate, it is fresh and fruit-driven, with impressive concentration, lively acidity and a well-defined structure. The tannins are sweet, polished and silky, while a gentle savoury nuance adds depth to the persistent finish. Although enjoyable in its youth, the wine’s structure and 12 months of oak ageing give it the capacity to develop further over the next few years. It is best appreciated while its vibrant fruit and supple tannins are at the forefront.

Production
The grapes come exclusively from Canalicchio di Sopra’s youngest vineyards in northern Montalcino, where variations in site and soil contribute distinctive Sangiovese character. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperatures, with daily pump-overs, followed by 15–20 days of skin maceration. The wine is then aged for 12 months in Slavonian oak casks of 50 and 25 hectolitres, together with 750-litre French oak barrels. Grapes from the estate’s older vineyards are reserved for the longer-aged Brunello di Montalcino and Riserva wines.

Food & Serving
A versatile food wine, this Rosso di Montalcino is well suited to pasta with ragù, Tuscan-style soups, roasted meats and mature cheeses. Serve slightly cool at around 16–18°C. Decanting is not essential, but a brief 20–30 minutes in a decanter can help the wine open up, particularly when served young.

Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti, Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra is a family estate with three generations of experience in Montalcino. The property covers 60 hectares, including 15 hectares of vineyards and two hectares of olive groves, with vines planted in both Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli. The estate carefully blends Sangiovese from these distinct sites, combining modern cellar technology with traditional methods and respect for the surrounding landscape. Its youngest-vineyard Rosso showcases the estate’s ability to produce wines of both freshness and genuine Montalcino character.
