Description
Canalicchio di Sopra’s Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli 2019 is a distinguished single-vineyard expression from one of Montalcino’s most celebrated crus. Crafted from Sangiovese grown on the renowned Montosoli hill, it combines the estate’s traditional approach with the depth, perfume and longevity associated with this exceptional site. The 2019 vintage is widely regarded as a particularly successful year in Montalcino, making this a compelling choice for both collectors and serious Brunello enthusiasts.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour with garnet highlights, the wine opens with an expressive bouquet of ripe red cherries, wild berries and violets, followed by notes of orange peel, sweet spices, iron-rich earth and subtle balsamic nuances. With time in the glass, further layers of tobacco, cedar and dried herbs emerge.
On the palate, it is concentrated yet remarkably poised, combining vibrant acidity with refined, tightly woven tannins. Flavours of sour cherry, raspberry and plum are complemented by mineral, herbal and savoury notes, leading to a long, persistent finish. The wine has excellent ageing potential and should develop beautifully over the next 15–25 years, or longer under ideal cellaring conditions.
Production
The Vigna Montosoli parcel lies on the northern side of Montalcino, where elevated vineyards, strong diurnal temperature variation and mineral-rich soils help produce Sangiovese of exceptional fragrance and structure. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected before traditional fermentation and extended maceration. Maturation takes place in large oak casks, allowing the wine to gain complexity and polish while preserving the purity of the fruit and the character of the Montosoli terroir.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 18°C after allowing the bottle to come gradually to temperature. Decant for around one to two hours when drinking the wine young, both to soften its youthful tannins and to reveal its aromatic depth. Its structure and savoury complexity make it an excellent partner for bistecca alla Fiorentina, roasted and braised meats, wild boar ragù, game birds, aged Pecorino Toscano and other mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti, Canalicchio di Sopra is one of the historic estates of Montalcino and has played an important role in establishing the reputation of the region’s northern vineyards. The family-owned winery is known for producing traditional, terroir-focused Brunello with a particular emphasis on balance, elegance and long-term ageing potential. Its wines from the Montosoli hill are especially sought after for their aromatic precision, mineral character and distinctive expression of one of Montalcino’s most prestigious vineyard sites.
