Canalicchio di Sopra’s Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2019 is a refined expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s historic estates. Produced in the northern part of the appellation, it combines impressive concentration with polished tannins, vibrant acidity and the complex character expected from a distinguished Riserva. The estate was founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti and remains rooted in a balance between traditional winemaking and modern technology.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in appearance, with the garnet tones that develop naturally in a mature Brunello. The nose is layered and expressive, revealing black cherries, tobacco and balsamic notes, with further nuances emerging as the wine opens in the glass. On the palate, the wine is beautifully concentrated yet balanced, supported by fresh acidity and supple, well-integrated tannins. Its dark-fruit profile is complemented by savoury tobacco and balsamic complexity, leading to a long, elegant finish. With its structure, acidity and depth, this Riserva has excellent aging potential and should develop gracefully over the next 10–15 years, or longer under suitable cellar conditions.

Production
The estate’s vineyards are located in two distinct areas of Montalcino: Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli. Their differing elevations, positions and soils produce distinct expressions of Sangiovese, which are carefully combined in the cellar to create a complex and harmonious wine. Canalicchio di Sopra works with modern technology while respecting traditional methods and the natural character of the land; specific harvesting and vinification details for the 2019 Riserva are not provided.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for rich Tuscan cuisine, this Brunello Riserva is well suited to braised beef, roasted game, wild boar ragù, osso buco and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 18°C, allowing the bottle to warm gently if necessary. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s balsamic and savoury layers, while older bottles should be handled more gently and decanted only to remove any sediment.

Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra was founded by Primo Pacenti in 1962 and is located in the northern part of Montalcino. Today, three generations have continued the family’s work across a 60-hectare estate, including 15 hectares of vineyards and 2 hectares of olive groves. The winery is recognised for combining the distinct character of its Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli vineyards with careful cellar work, creating Brunello wines that express both the diversity of the terroir and the estate’s longstanding commitment to quality.
