Canalicchio di Sopra, Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2015

Canalicchio di Sopra’s Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2015 is a distinguished expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s historic estates. Produced only in exceptional vintages and given extended maturation, it combines the energy of the 2015 growing season with the depth, structure and finesse expected of a serious Riserva.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a vivid ruby-red colour with garnet reflections that develop with age. The nose is complex and layered, offering aromas of ripe red cherries, wild berries, dried flowers and Mediterranean herbs, followed by subtle nuances of tobacco, spice and well-integrated oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet finely balanced, with concentrated fruit, lively acidity and firm, polished tannins. Notes of cherry, plum, liquorice and savoury earth unfold through a long, persistent finish. This is a structured Brunello with excellent cellaring potential and should continue to develop additional tertiary complexity over the next 10–15 years, provided it is stored in good conditions.

Production
The estate is located in the northern part of Montalcino and farms vineyards in both Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli. These sites offer distinct positions and soils, producing different profiles of Sangiovese that are carefully blended in the cellar for balance and complexity. The grapes are harvested with care and vinified according to traditional Brunello principles, with the wine receiving the extended maturation required for Riserva status before release.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for rich and flavourful dishes such as Tuscan beef, roast lamb, wild boar ragù, braised meats and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to stand upright before opening. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to open the wine’s aromas and soften its youthful structure, although older bottles should be decanted gently and for a shorter time to preserve their delicate development.

Producer
Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra was founded by Primo Pacenti in 1962 and remains a family estate with three generations of experience in Montalcino. The property covers 60 hectares, including 15 hectares of vineyards and two hectares of olive groves, and combines modern winemaking technology with respect for traditional methods and the natural environment. Its position in the northern part of Montalcino, together with vineyards in both Canalicchio di Sopra and the renowned Le Gode di Montosoli area, gives the estate access to a diverse range of Sangiovese expressions.
