Canalicchio di Sopra, Brunello di Montalcino 2021

Canalicchio di Sopra’s 2021 Brunello di Montalcino is a refined expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s historic northern estates. Concentrated yet elegantly balanced, it combines dark cherry fruit, savoury tobacco and balsamic complexity with supple tannins and vibrant acidity. Founded in 1962, the estate has been producing Brunello for three generations while respecting both traditional methods and the character of its vineyards.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby-red colour with garnet nuances that will develop further with age. Its aromatic profile is beautifully layered, led by black cherries and ripe red berries, followed by tobacco, balsamic herbs and subtle savoury notes. On the palate, it is concentrated and complex, with polished tannins, refreshing acidity and a long, structured finish that brings the dark-fruit and balsamic tones into focus. Already approachable with decanting, this Brunello has the structure and balance to develop gracefully over the next 10–15 years, and potentially longer under suitable cellar conditions.

Production
The estate’s vineyards are located in two distinct areas of Montalcino: Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli. Their different soils and exposures contribute contrasting expressions of Sangiovese, which are carefully blended in the winery. The grapes undergo skin maceration for 15–20 days, followed by temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation in stainless-steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 36 months in large 25-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks before spending a further year maturing in bottle.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for roasted or grilled red meat, game and hearty Tuscan dishes, it also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth, to soften the tannins and allow its aromatic complexity to unfold.

Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra was founded by Primo Pacenti in 1962 and is situated in the northern part of the municipality of Montalcino. The estate covers 60 hectares, including 15 hectares of vineyards and two hectares of olive groves. Now run across three generations, Canalicchio di Sopra combines careful vineyard work and modern cellar technology with a strong respect for traditional Brunello production and the surrounding environment. Its position in two important Montalcino vineyard zones gives the estate access to a distinctive range of Sangiovese expressions.
