Canalicchio di Sopra, Brunello di Montalcino 2021

Canalicchio di Sopra’s Brunello di Montalcino 2021 is a refined expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s historic estates. Combining fruit from the Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli vineyards, it balances impressive concentration with fresh acidity, supple tannins and the distinctive savoury complexity of Brunello. The estate was founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti and remains family-owned across three generations.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, the wine opens with enticing aromas of black cherries, tobacco and balsamic nuances, complemented by subtle earthy and savoury notes. On the palate, it is beautifully concentrated and complex, with ripe dark fruit, gentle spice and refined oak character supported by refreshing acidity and soft, well-integrated tannins. This is already approachable with decanting, but its structure and balance will allow it to develop further in bottle. Stored in suitable cellar conditions, it should gain additional layers of dried fruit, leather, tobacco and woodland character over the next decade or more.

Production
The grapes come from two distinct vineyard areas in Montalcino: Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli. Differences in elevation, exposure and soil contribute contrasting expressions of Sangiovese, which are carefully blended for balance and depth. Following a 15–20-day maceration on the skins, alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperatures. The wine is then aged for 36 months in 25-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks, followed by a further year of bottle maturation before release.

Food & Serving
A classic partner for grilled or roasted red meat, game and hearty Tuscan dishes, this Brunello also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 18°C in a large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glass to allow its aromas to open fully. Decant for around one to two hours before serving, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth.

Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra was established in 1962 by Primo Pacenti in the northern part of the Montalcino commune. The estate covers 60 hectares, including 15 hectares of vineyards and two hectares of olive groves, and has been shaped by three generations of winemaking expertise. Canalicchio di Sopra combines modern cellar technology with respect for traditional methods and the natural character of its vineyards, contributing to the reputation and diversity of Brunello di Montalcino.
