Canalicchio di Sopra’s Brunello di Montalcino 2021 is a beautifully concentrated and complex expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s historic northern estates. Founded in 1962, the family-run winery combines traditional methods with careful modern technology, creating a Brunello with impressive depth, freshness and refinement.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby colour with developing garnet tones. Its aromatic profile opens with ripe black cherries, tobacco and balsamic nuances, followed by subtle earthy and spicy notes. On the palate, it is concentrated yet balanced, with supple tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, savoury finish that reflects the structure of the vintage. With its combination of fruit, freshness and well-integrated oak, the 2021 Brunello is approachable with decanting but will develop further complexity over the next 8–15 years, and potentially longer under suitable cellar conditions.

Production
The grapes are sourced from Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli, two areas with distinct soils and exposures in Montalcino. The resulting Sangiovese parcels are carefully blended to create a balanced and complex final wine. After a 15–20-day maceration on the skins, alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. The wine then matures for 36 months in 25-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks, followed by a further year of bottle ageing before release.

Food & Serving
This Brunello is an excellent match for roasted or grilled red meats, game and hearty dishes such as wild boar stew. Its freshness and firm structure also make it a natural partner for mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to breathe in a decanter for 1–2 hours, particularly when enjoyed in its youth.

Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra was founded by Primo Pacenti in 1962 and is located in the northern part of Montalcino. Today, the estate covers 60 hectares, including 15 hectares of vineyards and 2 hectares of olive groves. For three generations, the family has produced wine with a strong respect for the land and traditional practices, while embracing modern cellar technology. Its vineyards in Canalicchio di Sopra and the renowned Le Gode di Montosoli area showcase the diversity of Montalcino’s terroirs and have helped establish the estate as a respected producer in the region.
