Canalicchio di Sopra, Brunello di Montalcino 2020

Canalicchio di Sopra’s Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is a refined expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s historic estates. Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti, the winery combines deep-rooted tradition with precise modern winemaking, creating a Brunello marked by concentration, freshness and elegant structure.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in appearance, with the beginnings of garnet hues as the wine develops. The nose reveals ripe black cherries alongside tobacco, balsamic nuances and subtle earthy complexity. On the palate, it is beautifully concentrated yet balanced, offering layers of dark fruit, supple tannins and vibrant acidity. Its 36 months of oak ageing have brought additional depth without overshadowing the character of the Sangiovese. This is an approachable Brunello now, but it will develop further complexity over the next 10–15 years under suitable cellar conditions.

Production
The estate is located in the northern part of Montalcino and owns vineyards in two distinct areas: Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli. Differences in elevation, exposure and soil contribute contrasting Sangiovese profiles, which are carefully blended in the cellar. The grapes undergo skin maceration for 15–20 days, followed by temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine then matures for 36 months in 25-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks before spending a further year ageing in bottle.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for grilled or roasted red meat, game and rich braised dishes, this Brunello also works beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 18°C, allowing the bottle to come close to room temperature without becoming warm. Decanting for approximately 1–2 hours is recommended, particularly when serving the wine young, to open its aromas and soften its already polished tannins.

Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra was founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti and remains a family estate now operating across three generations. The property covers approximately 60 hectares, including 15 hectares of vineyards and 2 hectares of olive groves. With a strong presence in northern Montalcino, Canalicchio di Sopra is recognised for bringing together the character of its distinct vineyard sites while respecting traditional methods, the surrounding nature and the identity of Brunello di Montalcino.
