Canalicchio di Sopra, Brunello di Montalcino 2020

Canalicchio di Sopra’s 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is a refined expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s historic estates. Concentrated yet beautifully balanced, it combines dark cherry fruit, savoury complexity and supple tannins with the structure expected of a traditionally made Brunello. Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti, the estate remains family-run and deeply rooted in the northern part of Montalcino.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby-red colour with garnet nuances. Its aromatic profile is richly layered, opening with black cherries and dark berries, followed by tobacco, balsamic notes and subtle earthy tones. On the palate, it is beautifully concentrated and complex, with ripe fruit, refreshing acidity and smooth, well-integrated tannins. A long, savoury finish reveals the wine’s depth and balance. With its structure and freshness, the 2020 Brunello should develop gracefully in bottle over the next decade or more, while already offering considerable drinking pleasure.

Production
Made from Sangiovese grown in two distinct areas of Montalcino—Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli—the wine benefits from the different soils and exposures of these celebrated sites. The grapes are carefully combined in the cellar to create a balanced and complex cuvée. After a 15–20-day maceration on the skins, alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperatures. The wine is then aged for 36 months in 25-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks, followed by a further year of bottle maturation before release.

Food & Serving
This Brunello is an excellent partner for roasted or grilled red meat, game such as venison or wild boar, and hearty stews. Its acidity and savoury character also complement mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to breathe. Decanting for approximately one to two hours is recommended, particularly when opening the wine in its youth, to soften the tannins and reveal its aromatic complexity.

Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra was established in 1962 by Primo Pacenti and is now operated across three generations. The estate covers approximately 60 hectares in the northern part of Montalcino, including 15 hectares of vineyards and two hectares of olive groves. Its wines reflect a careful balance between modern cellar technology, respect for nature and traditional Brunello practices. By working with grapes from both Canalicchio di Sopra and the Le Gode di Montosoli area, the estate captures the diversity of Montalcino’s terroir in a distinctive and consistently elegant style.
