Canalicchio di Sopra, Brunello di Montalcino 2019

Canalicchio di Sopra’s Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is a beautifully concentrated and complex expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s historic estates. Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti, the family-run winery combines traditional methods with modern precision, creating a Brunello that balances depth and structure with notably soft tannins and lively acidity.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby-red colour, developing garnet tones with age. Its expressive nose combines ripe black cherries with tobacco, balsamic herbs and subtle earthy nuances. On the palate, it is concentrated yet elegant, with generous dark-fruit flavours, well-integrated tannins and refreshing acidity that carries through to a long, savoury finish. The 2019 vintage offers both immediate appeal and excellent cellaring potential. It can be enjoyed now after decanting, but will develop greater complexity over the next 10–15 years, with the structure to mature well beyond that under suitable cellar conditions.

Production
The grapes come from Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli in the northern part of Montalcino. These two sites offer differing exposures and soils, producing complementary expressions of Sangiovese that are carefully blended in the winery. After a 15–20-day maceration on the skins, alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperatures. The wine is then matured for 36 months in 25-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks, followed by a further year of bottle ageing before release.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for grilled or roasted red meat, game and hearty Tuscan dishes, this Brunello also works beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth; older bottles should be decanted carefully and for a shorter period to separate any sediment without losing their delicate aromas.

Producer
Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra was established by Primo Pacenti in 1962 and remains a significant traditional estate in the northern Montalcino area. The property covers approximately 60 hectares, including 15 hectares of vineyards and two hectares of olive groves, and is now in its third generation. The family’s wines reflect a close understanding of the estate’s distinct vineyard sites, while combining respect for nature and longstanding traditions with carefully applied modern cellar technology.
