Canalicchio di Sopra’s Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is a classic expression of northern Montalcino, combining the depth of Sangiovese with refined freshness and aromatic complexity. Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti, the estate has been producing Brunello for three generations, with a style that respects traditional methods while making thoughtful use of modern cellar technology.

Tasting Notes
The wine has a deep ruby-red appearance, developing garnet reflections with age. Its bouquet is layered and inviting, revealing ripe black cherries alongside tobacco, balsamic notes and subtle earthy nuances. On the palate, it is beautifully concentrated yet balanced, with supple tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, savoury finish. The 2019 vintage offers both immediate appeal and excellent cellaring potential. Its structure, freshness and concentration should allow it to develop greater aromatic complexity over the next 10–15 years, and it can be enjoyed even longer under good storage conditions.

Production
The grapes come from Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli, two distinct vineyard areas in the northern part of Montalcino. Differences in elevation, exposure and soil contribute contrasting expressions of Sangiovese, which are carefully blended to create a balanced and complex Brunello. After harvesting, the grapes undergo skin maceration for 15–20 days, followed by temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation in stainless-steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 36 months in 25-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks before spending a further year refining in bottle.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for roasted or grilled red meat, game and hearty Tuscan dishes, this Brunello also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 18°C. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended when opening the wine young, both to soften the tannins and to allow its balsamic and savoury aromas to unfold.

Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra was established in 1962 by Primo Pacenti and remains a family estate with three generations involved in its development. The property covers 60 hectares, including 15 hectares of vineyards and two hectares of olive groves, in the northern part of the Montalcino appellation. Its vineyards in Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli give the winery access to distinct terroirs, while its combination of traditional ageing practices, respect for nature and precise modern winemaking has made it a highly regarded producer in the region.
