Canalicchio di Sopra, Brunello di Montalcino 2019

Canalicchio di Sopra’s Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is a beautifully concentrated expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s historic estates. Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti, the winery combines traditional Brunello-making with careful vineyard work and modern cellar technology, resulting in a wine of depth, balance and impressive elegance.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in appearance, with the beginnings of garnet developing with maturity. The nose opens with black cherries, tobacco and balsamic notes, followed by subtle earthy and spicy nuances. On the palate, it is concentrated yet refined, with supple tannins, fresh acidity and a long, harmonious finish. The 36 months of Slavonian oak ageing are well integrated, adding complexity without overshadowing the fruit. This Brunello is approachable with decanting but has the structure and balance to develop beautifully over many years in the bottle.

Production
The estate is located in the northern part of Montalcino, with vineyards in both Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli. These two sites offer distinct positions and soils, producing different expressions of Sangiovese that are carefully blended in the cellar. The grapes undergo a 15–20-day skin maceration, followed by temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation in stainless-steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 36 months in 25-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks and given a further year of bottle maturation before release.

Food & Serving
A natural match for roasted or grilled red meat, game and hearty Tuscan dishes, this Brunello also pairs especially well with mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 18°C, allowing the bottle to breathe before drinking. Decant for around 1–2 hours when enjoying it young, particularly alongside a substantial meal; older bottles should be decanted carefully and briefly to remove any sediment while preserving their delicate aromas.

Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra was founded by Primo Pacenti in 1962 and remains a family-run estate with three generations involved in its winemaking tradition. The property covers 60 hectares, including 15 hectares of vineyards and two hectares of olive groves, in the northern sector of Montalcino. Its focus on combining the character of several important vineyard sites with respect for nature and long-established methods has made Canalicchio di Sopra a respected name in the region.
