Canalicchio di Sopra, Brunello di Montalcino 2018

Canalicchio di Sopra’s 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is a refined expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s historic estates. Concentrated yet elegant, it combines dark cherry fruit, savoury tobacco and balsamic nuances with supple tannins and refreshing acidity. The estate was founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti and has remained in family hands for three generations.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby colour with developing garnet hues. The nose is complex and inviting, revealing black cherries, dried herbs, tobacco and subtle balsamic notes, with an earthy character emerging as it opens. The palate is beautifully concentrated but balanced, offering layers of ripe dark fruit, gentle spice and savoury undertones. Its polished tannins and well-integrated acidity provide structure and freshness, while the long, persistent finish leaves notes of cherry, tobacco and balsamic herbs. Already enjoyable with decanting, this Brunello has the structure to develop further in the bottle for many years.

Production
The grapes come from Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli, two distinct sites in the northern part of Montalcino. Differences in elevation and soil contribute distinct Sangiovese characteristics, which are carefully blended in the cellar. After a 15–20-day maceration on the skins, the wine undergoes alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. It is then aged for 36 months in 25-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks, followed by a further year of bottle maturation before release.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for roasted or grilled red meat, game and hearty Tuscan dishes, this Brunello also works beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 18°C. Decant for 30–60 minutes before serving to help open the wine’s aromatic complexity and soften its already polished tannins; older bottles should be decanted carefully to separate any sediment.

Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra was founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti and is located in the northern part of the Montalcino appellation. Today, the estate encompasses 60 hectares, including 15 hectares of vineyards and two hectares of olive groves. Across three generations, the family has combined respect for traditional methods and the surrounding nature with modern technology, producing Sangiovese from two distinct Montalcino sites and blending them with precision to create wines of depth, balance and regional character.
