Description
Campogiovanni Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Il Quercione 2019 is the flagship wine from San Felice’s Montalcino estate, crafted only in outstanding vintages. Sourced exclusively from the tiny 2.5-hectare Il Quercione vineyard, this Riserva captures the most refined and ageworthy expression of Sangiovese Grosso from Campogiovanni’s terroir. It’s a Brunello that brings together depth, precision and classic Montalcino character, built for both immediate pleasure and long-term cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Il Quercione Riserva shows a deep, luminous ruby core with garnet flashes at the rim, hinting at both concentration and evolving complexity. The bouquet is layered and refined: wild cherry, black plum and dried raspberry intertwine with notes of violets, rose petals, sweet tobacco, leather and blood orange zest, underpinned by nuances of cedar, sandalwood, cigar box and a subtle earthy, ferrous minerality.
On the palate, this is a structured yet finely etched Brunello, with a harmonious balance of ripe red and dark fruit, vibrant acidity and firmly woven, chalky tannins. Flavors of marasca cherry, redcurrant and black tea are lifted by savory tones of dried herbs, licorice, balsamic and warm spices from oak. The finish is long, poised and mouthcoating, with persistent notes of cherry, spice and mineral. Still youthful, the 2019 has significant aging potential; it will evolve beautifully over 15–20+ years from vintage, gaining further complexity, truffle and underbrush notes with time in bottle.
Production
Il Quercione comes from a single, southwest-facing parcel within the Campogiovanni estate in the southern sector of Montalcino, where warm days, cool nights and well-drained, stony soils of galestro and alberese with clay veins yield deeply flavored but elegant Sangiovese Grosso. Grapes are hand-harvested with strict selection in the vineyard and at the cellar door, limiting production to only the best clusters in exceptional years. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel or concrete, with extended maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity. The wine then matures for an extended period—traditionally several years—in large Slavonian oak casks and selected French oak barrels, followed by further aging in bottle before release, in line with and often exceeding Brunello di Montalcino Riserva regulations.
Food & Serving
This Riserva is an ideal partner for rich, savory dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, braised beef, lamb shank, wild boar ragù, truffled pasta or aged pecorino and Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve at 18 °C (around 64–66 °F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the aromatics to expand. Decanting is recommended—about 2 hours for a young bottle like the 2019—to soften the tannins and fully reveal its layered bouquet; older bottles may need a gentler, shorter decant primarily to separate any sediment.
Producer
San Felice is a historic Tuscan estate based in Castelnuovo Berardenga in Chianti Classico, renowned for its pioneering work with Sangiovese and native grape varieties. In the 1980s the estate expanded to Montalcino with the acquisition of Campogiovanni, which quickly established itself as one of the appellation’s most respected properties. Il Quercione Riserva is considered the crown jewel of the Campogiovanni range, regularly earning top scores and accolades from the Italian and international press. San Felice’s combination of meticulous vineyard work, research-driven viticulture and a deep respect for tradition has made it a benchmark producer in Tuscany and a reference point for collectors seeking classic yet refined Brunello di Montalcino.
