Description

Calera Ryan Vineyard Pinot Noir 2010 is a striking, deeply colored expression of Pinot Noir from one of California’s most distinctive cool-climate sites. Ryan Vineyard may be relatively young, but it already shows the mineral-driven character that has made Mount Harlan so highly regarded among Pinot Noir lovers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine is almost inky in color, unusual for Pinot Noir and a sign of its concentration. The nose is generous and layered, offering dark plums, black cherries, cloudberries, violet, and sandalwood. On the palate, the dark fruit profile returns with added depth from notes of licorice and nutmeg, giving the wine a savory, spiced edge. It is already enjoyable now, but it has the structure and balance to continue developing beautifully for another 15 years.

Production
Sourced from Ryan Vineyard, planted in 1998 on the mineral-rich slopes of Mount Harlan in California, this wine reflects a terroir known for producing Pinot Noir with tension, purity, and a distinct rocky imprint. Around 70% of the clusters were fermented whole, and in this vintage winemaker Mike Waller aged the wine for 20 months in French oak, with 30% new barrels, helping to frame the fruit without overpowering it.

Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir pairs well with roasted duck, game birds, mushroom dishes, grilled salmon, or pork tenderloin with herbs. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for about 30–45 minutes is recommended if opening it young to help the aromatics fully unfold.

Producer
Calera was founded by Josh Jensen and has become one of the benchmark names for Pinot Noir in California, especially in the cool-climate Mount Harlan area. The winery is widely respected for its focus on terroir-driven wines and for helping prove that California could produce Pinot Noir with both elegance and longevity.
