Description

Calera Pinot Noir Villiers 2019 is a refined expression of Central Coast Pinot Noir, offering the precision and elegance that have made Calera a benchmark name in Californian wine. Sourced from the Villiers block, one of the estate’s prime Pinot Noir parcels, this bottling showcases the tension between ripe California fruit and the lifted, mineral backbone that Calera is famous for. Since the 1970s, Calera has been a pioneer in planting Pinot Noir on limestone-rich slopes, and this wine continues that legacy with poise and depth.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Villiers Pinot Noir shows a vibrant, translucent ruby color with a youthful sheen at the rim. The nose is aromatic and expressive, offering layers of red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry coulis, supported by hints of rose petal, dried herbs, tea leaf and subtle baking spices from well-judged oak. On the palate, this is a poised, medium-bodied Pinot Noir with fine-grained tannins and a lively, refreshing acidity that keeps the wine focused and long. Flavors of red and black cherry, cranberry and pomegranate are interwoven with notes of forest floor, tobacco leaf and crushed stone, giving the wine both charm and complexity. The finish is long and pure, with lingering red fruit and a saline, mineral edge. While already approachable and expressive in its youth, the structure and balance suggest a solid aging potential of 8–12 years from vintage, gaining more earthy, savory nuances with time in bottle.

Production
Calera’s Pinot Noir Villiers 2019 comes from estate vineyards in the Central Coast, planted at elevation on rare limestone-rich soils more commonly associated with Burgundy than California. This distinctive terroir, combined with a cool, wind-influenced climate, naturally limits yields and extends the growing season, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful sorting to select only the healthiest clusters. In the cellar, Calera traditionally uses small-lot fermentations, often with a portion of whole clusters, to add structure and aromatic complexity. Fermentation takes place in open-top tanks with gentle punch-downs, followed by aging in French oak barrels to integrate tannins and enhance texture, without overwhelming the purity of fruit and the vineyard’s signature mineral character.

Food & Serving
Calera Pinot Noir Villiers 2019 is a versatile partner at the table, particularly suited to refined, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with roast duck, herb-crusted lamb, mushroom risotto, grilled salmon, or poultry dishes featuring thyme, sage or truffle. Earthy vegetables and dishes with wild mushrooms or root vegetables also highlight the wine’s subtle forest-floor notes. Serve slightly cool, at around 14–16°C (57–61°F), to emphasize its freshness and aromatic lift. A gentle decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up and reveal its floral and mineral nuances, especially in its youth.

Producer
Founded in 1975 by Josh Jensen, Calera is widely regarded as one of the founding champions of serious Pinot Noir in California. Convinced that limestone was essential for great Pinot, Jensen planted his vineyards high on the remote slopes of Mt. Harlan in the Central Coast, long before the area was fashionable, and effectively helped put the region on the fine-wine map. Over the decades, Calera’s single-vineyard Pinot Noirs have earned international acclaim for their finesse, age-worthiness and distinctive mineral signatures, often drawing comparisons to top Burgundy while remaining unmistakably Californian. Today, Calera continues to be a reference-point producer in the region, celebrated for its meticulous vineyard work, low-intervention winemaking and consistent commitment to quality.
