Description

Calera Pinot Noir Ryan 2018 is a beautifully sculpted Central Coast red that showcases the elegance and purity that have made Calera a benchmark for American Pinot Noir. Sourced from the Ryan Vineyard, one of the estate’s prized high-elevation sites, this wine offers depth, finesse, and a distinct sense of place. Named after founder Josh Jensen’s late friend Jim Ryan, it carries both emotional and historical significance within the Calera portfolio.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Ryan Pinot Noir shows a vibrant medium ruby color with a clear, bright rim. The nose is layered and expressive, offering aromas of wild strawberry, dark cherry, raspberry coulis, and pomegranate, interwoven with hints of rose petal, dried herbs, tea leaf, and subtle oak spice—think clove, cinnamon, and a touch of cocoa. On the palate, this is a refined, medium-bodied Pinot Noir with a core of red and black berry fruit supported by fresh, lively acidity and fine, chalky tannins. Flavors of cherry, red plum, and cranberry are complemented by earthy undertones—mushroom, forest floor, and a mineral edge that reflects the limestone-rich soils. The finish is long, precise, and savory, with a graceful balance that will appeal to Burgundy lovers and New World Pinot fans alike. While already approachable and complex now, the structure and acidity suggest an aging potential of 8–12 years from vintage, rewarding patience with greater aromatic complexity and silkier texture.

Production
Calera’s Ryan Vineyard sits at high elevation in the Mt. Harlan area of California’s Central Coast, a cool, windswept site rooted in rare limestone soils that are more commonly associated with Burgundy than California. This terroir, combined with a long, cool growing season, encourages slow, even ripening and naturally low yields, intensifying flavor and preserving acidity. Grapes are typically hand-harvested in small lots to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, the fruit is gently destemmed and fermented with attentive temperature control to preserve aromatic purity and fine tannin structure, often with a proportion of whole clusters to add spice and complexity. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a portion new) to integrate texture and flavor without overwhelming the vineyard character, before being bottled with minimal intervention to retain its distinctive sense of place.

Food & Serving
Calera Pinot Noir Ryan 2018 is a versatile companion at the table, pairing beautifully with roasted duck, herb-crusted lamb, pork tenderloin, mushroom risotto, and dishes featuring truffle or wild mushrooms. It also works wonderfully with grilled salmon, seared tuna, or poultry like roast chicken with root vegetables. Serve at around 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. A brief decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing more floral notes and refined spice.

Producer
Founded in 1975 by Josh Jensen, Calera quickly gained a reputation as one of California’s pioneering Pinot Noir estates, long before the Central Coast became widely recognized for premium cool-climate wines. Jensen’s decision to plant vines on limestone-rich slopes in the remote Mt. Harlan area was inspired by the great domaines of Burgundy, and that bold move has paid off in wines of remarkable character and longevity. Calera’s single-vineyard bottlings, including the Ryan Vineyard, are now considered reference points for American Pinot Noir, consistently earning acclaim from critics and collectors. The estate’s commitment to expressing site-driven, ageworthy wines has made Calera a cornerstone of the Central Coast’s fine wine identity.
