Description
Cà dei Frati’s Cuvée dei Frati is an elegant sparkling wine from Lugana, shaped by the region’s distinctive Turbiana grape and the moderating influence of Lake Garda. With its refined mousse, creamy texture and extended lees ageing, it offers a polished alternative to more familiar sparkling styles. The wine also reflects a long local tradition: the Cà dei Frati estate is documented as early as 1782, while the family’s first Lugana was bottled in 1969.
Tasting Notes
Bright golden yellow with delicate green highlights, this sparkling wine opens with inviting aromas of biscuit, toasted hazelnut and subtle creamy notes. The palate is silky and rounded, with a fine, persistent effervescence balanced by refreshing acidity. Its lees ageing gives the wine added depth and a softly savoury character without compromising its freshness.
Enjoy it in its youth for its lively fruit and elegant texture, or allow it a little further bottle age to develop more pronounced pastry, nutty and brioche-like nuances. It is best appreciated while the balance between creamy richness and bright acidity remains at its most vibrant.
Production
Produced in the Lugana area south of Lake Garda, the wine benefits from a mild climate and the lake’s temperature-regulating effect. Local breezes, including the Pelèr wind from the northern part of the lake, help create useful diurnal variation and preserve freshness in the grapes. The fruit is gently pressed directly, with fermentation carried out partly in stainless steel tanks and partly in barriques. The wine then spends at least 24 months on its lees, followed by a further four months of bottle ageing after disgorgement.
Food & Serving
A versatile choice as an aperitif, Cuvée dei Frati works particularly well with freshwater and saltwater fish, seafood salads, antipasti, poultry and cured meats such as salami. Its creamy texture and lively acidity also make it a natural partner for mild and semi-soft cheeses. Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Decanting is not recommended; pour carefully into sparkling wine glasses to preserve the mousse and aromatic detail.
Producer
Cà dei Frati traces its roots to a historic property in Lugana di Sirmione, where records mention a wine cellar as early as 1782. In 1939, Felice Dal Cero moved to the estate and began developing its potential, while his son Pietro continued the work in the vineyards and cellar. After three decades of dedication, Pietro helped establish the Lugana DOC in 1969 and bottled the family’s first Lugana. Today, Cà dei Frati is one of the most recognised names in the Lugana region, known for expressive wines that combine local character with careful, modern craftsmanship.
