Description
Ca’ dei Frati Lugana I Frati Magnum is the flagship white wine from one of Lugana’s most respected estates, offering a pure expression of Turbiana from the shores of Lake Garda. Known for its elegance, precision, and impressive capacity to evolve in bottle, it has become a benchmark for the Lugana DOC and a classic of northern Italian white wine.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw yellow in the glass, this wine is bright and refined, with the freshness and clarity you would expect from a wine grown close to Lake Garda. The nose typically shows white flowers, citrus peel, green apple, and subtle herbal and mineral notes, all framed by a clean, lifted character.
On the palate it is dry, vibrant, and well-structured, combining crisp acidity with a rounded texture and a fine saline streak that reflects its terroir. There is excellent balance between freshness and depth, with enough concentration to drink beautifully young, while the magnum format and careful bottle aging suggest strong potential for graceful development over several years.
Production
The grapes come from selected vineyards in the Lugana area, on clay and limestone soils that are ideal for Turbiana and help give the wine its distinctive structure and mineral edge. Harvesting is done with careful selection of the best berries, after which the wine is fermented and vinified in stainless steel to preserve purity and freshness. It then spends at least six months on the lees with selected fine yeasts, followed by an additional six months of bottle aging before release.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile white wine that pairs beautifully with seafood, lake fish, shellfish, risotto, light poultry dishes, and delicate white meats, as well as soft cheeses and vegetable-based cuisine. Serve it chilled at around 8–10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a short opening before serving can help if the wine has aged for a few years.
Producer
Ca’ dei Frati is one of the most important names in Lugana, with roots dating back to 1939 in Lugana di Sirmione, on the southern edge of Lake Garda. Over the decades, the estate has played a major role in elevating the reputation of the region and its signature Turbiana grape, earning widespread national and international recognition for the quality and consistency of its wines.
