Description
Cà dei Frati Benaco Bresciano Pratto 2023 is an elegant, layered white from the shores of Lake Garda, combining tropical fruit, mineral freshness and a beautifully rounded texture. Made from Turbiana, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, it stands out for its balance between richness and vibrant acidity, with a refined character shaped by both oak ageing and the lake’s distinctive microclimate. The Cà dei Frati estate has roots dating back to 1782 and played an important role in the development of Lugana’s DOC status in 1969.
Tasting Notes
The wine has a bright, pale golden appearance. On the nose, ripe tropical fruit emerges alongside subtle mineral tones, creating an aromatic profile that is both expressive and understated. The oak contributes gentle complexity without overwhelming the freshness of the fruit.
On the palate, Pratto is full and richly textured, with a generous, almost sweet impression of ripe fruit followed by refreshing acidity. Its finish is long and balanced, marked by persistent fruit and mineral notes. It is enjoyable now, but its structure and time spent in oak and bottle should allow it to develop additional complexity over the next few years.
Production
Pratto is produced in the Benaco Bresciano area, where the moderating influence of Lake Garda creates a favourable climate for high-quality white wines. The lake acts as a natural temperature regulator, while local breezes help preserve freshness and aromatic intensity. The Turbiana and Chardonnay are fermented in stainless steel and finished in barriques, undergoing malolactic fermentation before ageing for 12 months in oak. Sauvignon Blanc is fermented and matured in stainless steel, preserving its bright, aromatic character. The finished wine is then refined for a further six months in bottle before release.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C. Its combination of richness, acidity and minerality makes it a versatile partner for refined starters, including foie gras, as well as white meat and fish prepared with aromatic herbs and spices. It also pairs particularly well with mature cheeses. Decanting is not essential, although a brief 15–20 minutes in a carafe can help open the wine when served young.
Producer
Cà dei Frati is one of the best-known producers associated with the wines of the Lake Garda and Lugana area. Historical records mention the estate as early as 1782, while Felice Dal Cero established the family’s connection with Lugana after moving to Sirmione in 1939. His son Pietro contributed to decades of work in the vineyards and cellar that helped secure Lugana DOC recognition in 1969, later bottling the estate’s first Lugana Casa dei Frati. Today, the winery is recognised for expressive, terroir-driven whites that combine regional tradition with precise modern winemaking.
