Description

Burmester White Port is a bright, elegant expression of Portugal’s classic fortified-wine tradition, distinguished by its lively citrus colour, floral perfume and silky, refreshing palate. Produced by one of the historic Port houses, it is especially versatile as an aperitif while remaining true to the generous, aromatic style of white Port.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a lively lemon colour with delicate green reflections. Its expressive nose is rich and complex, led by floral aromas alongside fresh, fruit-driven notes. On the palate, it is smooth and silk-textured, with fine, fresh acidity that provides balance to the wine’s natural sweetness. This non-vintage White Port is best enjoyed young and fresh, although its fortified character gives it good stability once opened and stored properly.

Production
The grapes are destemmed and crushed before undergoing an extended maceration, a process designed to preserve and extract their aromatic character. Once the desired level of sweetness has been reached, grape brandy is added to fortify the wine and halt fermentation. Specific vineyard and terroir details are not provided, but the wine follows the traditional Portuguese method for producing aromatic white Port.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, as an aperitif or alongside roasted almonds, dried fruit, fresh figs and lightly dressed salads. It also works beautifully in simple Port-based long drinks. Decanting is not necessary; serve directly from the bottle and refrigerate after opening.

Producer
The Burmester name derives from the German word “Burgmeester,” meaning mayor, reflecting the family’s origins in Mölln in northern Germany. In 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash founded a grain-trading company in London, Burmester & Nash, before moving the business to Vila Nova de Gaia in 1750 and beginning to ship Port to the British Isles and across Europe. The family’s commercial and financial standing in London was considerable, and Wimbledon’s Burmester Road is said to commemorate their influence. Today, Burmester remains one of the notable historic names associated with Port production.
