Burmester 2020 Vintage Port is a rich, expressive fortified wine presented in an attractive wooden gift case. It combines vibrant red-fruit character with elegant tannins, freshness and impressive length—hallmarks of a well-made Vintage Port. The Burmester name has been associated with Port production and international trade since the company moved to Vila Nova de Gaia in 1750.

Tasting Notes
Deep in colour with striking purple highlights, this Vintage Port opens with an inviting bouquet of ripe red fruits, blackcurrants and a subtle raisin note. The palate is generous and fruit-driven, yet remarkably fresh and lively, with polished tannins providing structure and balance. Complex and expressive, it finishes with considerable length and a lingering impression of dark fruit. Although approachable in its youth, the wine has the concentration, freshness and tannic framework to develop further in bottle. Store it horizontally in a cool, dark place and expect additional layers of dried fruit, spice and savoury complexity with age.

Production
After fermentation, grape spirit is added to halt fermentation and preserve the wine’s natural sweetness and intense fruit character. The Port is then matured in wooden casks, with bottling taking place between the second and third year after harvest. Specific vineyard and grape-variety details are not provided, but the wine’s depth, freshness and structure reflect the traditional style of Vintage Port from the Douro region.

Food & Serving
Serve slightly cool, around 14–16°C, to highlight its freshness and keep the alcohol in balance. It is an excellent match for rich chocolate desserts, blue cheeses and firm, mature cheeses, while its depth also makes it a rewarding after-dinner drink on its own or alongside a good cigar. Decanting is recommended, particularly as the wine matures, both to separate any sediment and to allow its aromas to open.

Producer
Founded in London in 1730 by Henry Burmester and John Nash as a grain-trading company, Burmester moved to Vila Nova de Gaia in 1750 and began shipping Port to the British Isles and across Europe. The family’s commercial and financial activities were highly regarded in London, and the Burmester name is commemorated by Burmester Road in Wimbledon. Today, the house remains closely connected with the heritage of Port production and the historic cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia.
