Description
Burmester Porto Vintage 2016 is a distinguished fortified wine from one of Portugal’s most celebrated port houses. Made in a highly regarded vintage, it combines concentrated red-fruit character with freshness, elegant tannins and impressive length. The Burmester name has been associated with Port since the company moved from London to Vila Nova de Gaia in 1750.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep, vibrant colour with attractive purple hues. Its delicate yet expressive nose opens with abundant red fruit and blackcurrant, complemented by a subtle raisin note that hints at its fortified style and depth.
On the palate, the fruit becomes even more pronounced, supported by lively freshness and refined tannins. Complex and energetic, it finishes with remarkable persistence. Vintage Port has excellent aging potential, and the 2016 vintage can develop greater harmony and tertiary complexity over many years when stored in suitable conditions.
Production
Produced in Portugal’s Douro region, this Vintage Port reflects the character of the valley’s traditional Port-growing terroir, although the specific vineyard composition is not provided. After fermentation, grape spirit is added to stop fermentation and preserve the wine’s natural sweetness and fruit intensity. The Port is then matured in wooden casks and bottled between the second and third year after harvest, allowing it to retain its youthful character while gaining complexity.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly cool, around 14–16°C. This rich Vintage Port is a natural match for dark chocolate desserts, blue cheeses and firm, mature cheeses. It is also superb on its own at the end of a meal, or alongside a good cigar. Decanting is recommended, particularly as the wine matures, to separate any sediment and allow its aromas to open fully.
Producer
Burmester traces its origins to 1730, when Henry Burmester and John Nash founded a grain-trading company in London. In 1750, the business moved to Vila Nova de Gaia and began shipping Port to the British Isles and across Europe. The Burmester family became highly respected for its commercial and financial activities in London—a legacy reflected in Burmester Road in Wimbledon—and the house remains an established name in Portuguese Port.
