Description
Burmester Porto Vintage 2015 is a richly concentrated Portuguese fortified wine, combining vibrant red-fruit character with freshness, fine tannins and impressive length. Produced by one of Porto’s historic houses, it reflects the traditional style of Vintage Port and the Burmester family’s long connection with the port trade.
Tasting Notes
Deeply coloured with attractive purple highlights. The nose is delicate yet expressive, offering generous red-fruit aromas alongside ripe blackcurrant and a subtle hint of raisins. On the palate, the fruit becomes even more prominent, supported by lively freshness and elegant tannins. Complex and distinctive, it finishes with excellent persistence.
This Vintage Port is enjoyable in its youth for its vibrant fruit and energy, but it also has the structure to develop greater complexity with careful cellaring. Store horizontally in a cool, dark place and allow the wine time to mature according to personal preference.
Production
After fermentation, grape spirit is added to stop the fermentation and preserve the wine’s natural sweetness and fruit character. The fortified wine is then matured in wooden casks, with bottling taking place between the second and third year after harvest. The grapes and vineyard details are not specified, but the wine is made in the traditional style of Portuguese Vintage Port.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly cool, around 16–18°C. Burmester Porto Vintage 2015 is a natural match for rich chocolate desserts, blue cheeses and mature hard cheeses. It is also rewarding on its own after dinner, perhaps alongside a good cigar. Decanting is recommended, particularly with further bottle age, as Vintage Port may develop sediment; stand the bottle upright beforehand and pour carefully.
Producer
Burmester’s history dates back to 1730, when Henry Burmester and John Nash founded a grain-trading company in London. In 1750, the business moved to Vila Nova de Gaia, where it began exporting Port to the British Isles and throughout Europe. The Burmester family name derives from “Burgmeester”, the German word for mayor, reflecting the family’s origins in Mölln in northern Germany. The company became highly regarded for its commercial and financial activities in London, and Burmester Road in Wimbledon is named after the family. Today, Burmester remains an established name in the historic Port trade.
